Game settings for Reshade
  • AA set to FXAA – other AA settings will break depth effects such as Depth of Field blur or Fog effects.
  • Bloom OFF – For some reason this disables blur reffects in cutscenes, which allows me to apply Reshade’s depth of field without doubling on the in-game blur. During day-time bloom can be blinding.
  • Brightness 6 – This preserves detail in dark areas. Sewers get especially dark at lower brightness, so higher brightness is better for visibility.

Features common to most presets
  • More AA is applied on top of the game’s FXAA to further reduce some jagged edges. It is particularly noticeable on things like leaves, hair, haystacks, etc.
  • A very small amount of sharpening is applied to bring back detail after the AA. Texture details are very slightly enhanced.
  • Fog is added at a distance. Part of its function is to hide the bad LOD at a distance.
  • Gameplay friendly DoF is added. For the most part it should not interfere with gameplay since the auto-focus point is close to the crosshair. DoF does not produce any near blur so as to not obscure detail. The autofocus speed is not jarringly fast nor sluggish. The bokeh is hexagonal to match the vanilla DoF effect seen in cutscenes.
  • Most presets have a very slight coloured fog to add some ambience. It’s only really visible when looking at the sky. The Versailles presets exaggerate this a lot because they are meant to look dreamy. The Night Gaslight Glow preset exaggerates this to mimic the streets glowing with light.
  • Moderate bloom effects are added only to presets meant for nighttime. They serve to give a foggy appearance and exaggerate light sources.
  • Every preset has a custom LUT.
  • Eye Adaptation is present which slightly brightens the visuals when really dark, like underground. However, this does bring out the film grain present in the vanilla game.
  • Windows break depth effects like fog, even in the vanilla game (outside of cutscenes). These problems remain while using Reshade.

Included Reshades –

Paris Morning Orange Teal:
Recommended for morning or evening when the shadows are longer and there’s a dramatic difference between shadowed and lit areas. Comes with another clear/less fog variant.

Paris Night Party:
Comes in blue-fog and pink-fog variations.

Paris Night Warm:
This LUT was initially created to mimic Franciade’s look. Comes in Clear, Cloudy and Foggy variants. Rather than just add fog, the distant bloom increases in the latter variants to give a foggier look.

Paris Night Gaslight:
Comes with a version that lacks the prominent yellow fog, which is meant to mimic the streets glowing with light but can often be jarring when viewed at the wrong angle. Best suited for cloudy nights.

Paris Night Dark:
Is suitable for cloudy nights. Comes with a variant which is suitable for clear nights by removing distant bloom which is used to give a slightly foggy/surreal look and mask details.

Versailles Reshades –

Versailles’ colour is slightly different from Paris. Visibility and function are less important, with a focus on a surreal, dreamy presentation. The DoF blur and coloured fog are greatly exaggerated.

Versailles Vibrant Dusk:
Dramatic blues, more yellows and greens, adds an orange-blue coloured fog.

Versailles Sepia Morning:
Reduced blues, more yellows and greens, adds an orange fog

Installation and Setup Guide

A guide if you don't know what you're doing.

  • Get Reshade 5.9.2 installer with add-on support: https://reshade.me/downloads/ReShade_Setup_5.9.2_Addon.exe (latest Reshade available at https://reshade.me/ but these presets may not work correctly)
  • Reshade wil not work in multiplayer unless you get the version with full add-on support.
  • Install onto ACU, select DirectX 10/11/12
  • Necessary shader collections and exact shaders used are listed above. They are included in a version of the downloads or can be downloaded through the Reshade installer.
  • Extract zip file into game directory. Default location for Steam install would be C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Assassin’s Creed Unity. Presets can be accessed from Reshade's in-game menu.
  • Depth may not work correctly initially, which means fog and depth-of-field effects will be broken.
  • To fix depth, click "Edit global preprocessor definitions" and set:

    RESHADE_DEPTH_LINEARIZATION_FAR_PLANE 1000
    RESHADE_DEPTH_INPUT_IS_UPSIDE_DOWN 0
    RESHADE_DEPTH_INPUT_IS_REVERSED 1
    RESHADE_DEPTH_INPUT_IS_LOGARITHMIC 0

  • Go to the Add-ons tab, tick Generic depth.
  • In this tab, you can select the correct depth buffer. Tick the one with the most draw calls and vertices which also matches the resolution you are running the game at. There will be another option with a lot of draw calls but the resolution will be higher (if I'm not mistaken it is 4096x4096) but this is not the correct buffer.
  • You can refer to the video guide below which goes further in-depth and shows exactly what to do.
