A major overhaul to Shovel the Cheeky Quasit. She now levels with you, gains unique
 Illusion
and
Enchantment spells, and has her own progression. I always use Shovel in my runs from when I get her in the beginning all the way to the portal on the big bad at the end. This is my way of making her a full companion.

Be aware, this mod essentially adds a DruidArcane Trickster Rogue / Great Old One Warlock / Shadow Monk to the party.

This is a heavily-scripted mod and has been thoroughly tested and polished over the course of 2 months, but there may be edge cases I didn't come across or safeguard against.

This is built on and designed for patch 7 and up. Patch 6 and below will not be supported.

Shovel Evolved 2.0 Update - When playing on Tactician/Honor (or setting 'Character Power' to Tactician in Custom), almost all of Shovel's abilities have been reduced in both damage and frequency of use. Almost all sources of critical hit reduction now only apply to unarmed melee attacks. Power up the nerf cannon.

To remove these restrictions (for those playing on Tactician+ or other similar difficulty-boosting mods, for example), have Shovel turn Invisible and then have her use Shadow Strike on Withers. You'll get a Yes/No confirmation prompt. Select 'Yes' and the difficulty restrictions will be removed.

Level
: A major change to Shovel is her ability to be at the same level as the person who summoned her. If you're level 10 when you summon her, so will she. This is important because she has her own progression/class, so her level determines what abilities are unlocked or what her stats are like.

Summoning spell is bound to an item: Just like Scratch or Us, the holder of a new item given to you upon first summoning Shovel will add the spell to summon Shovel. This means anyone with the item can summon Shovel. No need to respec into Wizard. This even works if you're a Storm Sorcerer.

Shapechanger: Quasits are Abyssal fiends that can shapechange into either a bat, toad, centipede or a wolf. I've incorporated that feature into Shovel. She can now shapechange into a:

  • Deep Bat -- Can use Echolocation to possibly reveal hidden enemies. Main damage type:
    Necrotic.

    Echolocation demo: https://youtu.be/8qko6_bRqfQ
  • Cave Frog -- Extended jump, and later can hypnotize opponents. Main damage type:
    Acid.
  • Phase Spiderling -- No centipedes in the game, so I went with this instead. Phase Spiderling can use Ethereal Jaunt to teleport around. Main damage type:
    Poison.
  • Shadow Cat -- Too many canines already, so I went with a Sphinx cat. If there are Shadow Mastiffs in the Shadow Cursed Lands, there must be Shadow Cats too, right? The model is the same as the cats found in Last Light Inn and Moonrise Towers, but this one has black skin and blue eyes. It's a mix of a regular cat and a panther. It can later "Slink" (Prowl) to turn invisible and much later can enrage and turn into a Gremishka. Main damage type: Physical.

Sorcery Points
: All that time spent with its previous master had an effect on Shovel. She can now use Sorcery Points to fuel abilities in and out of battle. Some abilities during battle will cost Sorcery Points. You get 2 at level 2 and then get 1 every level after (up to 12 for those that can level beyond 12).

Statuses you apply to Shovel remain on her even while dismissed. You can safely dismiss or resummon Shovel without worrying about her buffs being removed. Shovel will lose the statuses if killed in battle though. Shovel retains the same
hit points it had if resummoned or dismissed.

Non-Lethal Attacks are shared with her
. If you toggle them on for the party, Shovel will also land non-lethal blows.

Restoration faucet applies to summons and party followers. As an added bonus, I altered the restoration faucet's effects to also apply to summons and party followers. This isn't just for Shovel. Any summon or party follower will now have this restoration applied when the faucet is activated. I won't spoil what the restoration faucet is, but if you know, you know.

New in 2.0.1.0 (Feb 2025)

Shovel is now a proper camp follower. While dismissed, she'll dance, drink, eat, wander around, visit different campers, practice her basic fighting skills on training dummies using all her available shapes, "steal" bread from the camp chest (it's just visual - she doesn't actually take anything), stare at the magic mirror in fear ('cause Thayan cellar) and she'll rarely turn invisible to jump scare someone in camp.

She has special interactions with certain campers. A few examples without spoilers:
  • When visiting either Shadowheart or Gale, she'll turn into the Shadow Cat and get pet by them.
  • When visiting Minthara, she'll turn into the Phase Spiderling and get pet by her.
  • When visiting Wyll, Karlach or a certain bald man in Act 3, she'll drink and dance while they cheer.
  • When visiting Mizora, they'll both dance.
  • When visiting Lae'zel, she'll turn into the Cave Frog while Lae'zel inspects her closely.
  • When visiting Astarion, Withers or the Oathbreaker Knight, she'll turn into the Deep Bat.
  • When visiting a certain duo of Selunites, she'll get blinded briefly.
  • When visiting a certain high ranking Baldurian in Act 3, she'll turn into the Phase Spiderling and scare them (all just visual).
  • If Shadowheart's stool isn't destroyed, she'll occasionally sit and drink for a bit there.
  • She'll often visit the campfire, but she'll also warm her hands if the fire is lit.

While summoned and in camp, she'll still wander around and have a few animations, but everything else is only available while she's dismissed.

And last but not least, she'll now join you in the epilogue! She'll dance, eat, and wander around without the tricks since I don't know how picky Withers is during the epilogue.

New in 2.0.2.1 (Feb 2025)

Dialog: Shovel's dialog relating to the Thayan Cellar quest has been fixed and enhanced. The dialog would sometimes bug out if you left the region or talked to Shovel with different party members. The name would also sometimes not apply if you summoned her after act 1. This is now all fixed. On top of that, she will say more than just the 'bored' dialog when speaking to her. If you finish the Thayan Cellar quest, she'll mention the outcome of it when you next speak to her, but then changes to new cycling/randomized dialog. Something about being in Grymforge and her still talking about the cellar was just unusual. If you lose the item that gives you the spell to summon her, you can speak to Shovel in camp to retrieve it. There are many more.

Background Goals: Added 7 background goals related to Shovel. These are:
  • Tiny Fiend in Need - Outlander - Summon The Cheeky Quasit at least once.
  • Lessons in Trickery - Charlatan - Help The Cheeky Quasit learn a new ability by attacking her.
  • A Drow's Best Friend - Noble - Pet The Cheeky Quasit while she's in Phase Spiderling shape in camp.
  • Kindred Murderisers - Haunted One - Enthuse about murder with The Cheeky Quasit. (through dialog)
  • Abyssal Artisanry - Guild Artisan - Have The Cheeky Quasit upgrade its Nut-Buster to the maximum amount. (See more about this in the secrets section)
  • Beefy Knowledge - Sage - Unlock all the secret abilities and bonuses for The Cheeky Quasit.
  • One Shapechanger's Trash - Urchin - Absorb the Strange Ox's Shapechanging knowledge. (See more in the secrets section)

Level 1

Abyssal Pact: Shovel levels with you and her Proficiency Bonus is added to her AC.

Magical Durability: +2 bonus to saving throws against spells. In 5e, Quasits have Magic Resistance, but that ended up being a bit overpowered.

Home Protection: Resistance to
Psychic damage.

Level 2

Abyssal Acuity: Proficiency Bonus is doubled on Spell Save DC and Attack Rolls.

Shapechanger (
during combat)
: Access to the four shapes mentioned above. At this level, each shape has basic abilities similar to a regular familiar with 1 or 2 added abilities. When you change shape, you keep the same stats and
hit points, but if you are defeated in any shape, you will be unsummoned instead of reverting to your old form.

Thick Thighs: Jump distance increased by 1.5m.

Level 3

Resourceful Quasit: Restore action and bonus action at the start of battle.

Break the Unbroken:
+1d4
Slashing,
Bludgeoning or
Piercing damage to targets that still have all their hit points.

Phantasmal Claws: Hurl 1 (2 at level 5 and 3 at level 10) illusory claw at a target. This is similar to Eldritch Blast, but it deals
Psychic damage.
  • 1d4 at level 1 > 1d6 at level 5 > 1d8 at level 9
  • (Tactician) 1d4 at level 1 > 1d6 at level 7

Shadow Strike (
during combat)
: Same as the Shadow Monk version, but it starts out weak and increases in damage and range every few levels. Normal Claws attack damage plus:
  • 1d4 at level 1, 2d4 at level 4, 3d4 at level 7, 4d4 at level 10
    Psychic damage
  • (Tactician)
    D4 cantrip
    Psychic damage (1d4 at level 1, 2d4 at level 5, 3d4 at level 10)

Level 4

Shapechanger (Intermediate):
  • Cave Frog no longer takes fall damage, gains Reflective Mucus (same as the Frog by the swamp), and unlocks Camouflage and Corrosive Spit.
  • Deep Bat unlocks Invisibility, Blind as a Bat (Blindness), and Shattering Screech (
     during combat, AOE
    Thunder damage).
  • Phase Spiderling unlocks Spiderling Discharge (Poison projectile), Pulling Web (Thorn Whip) and Spiderling Web (smaller range version of Web).
  • Shadow Cat unlocks Slink (Invisibility), Shadow Strike (Sneak Attack), Bite (Bonus Action) and Kitten Size (Reduce).

Critical Dread: Landing critical hits on enemies can cause it and nearby enemies to become frightened. Critical hit threshold reduced by 1. (Tactician) The critical hit reduction applies only to unarmed melee attacks.

Murderizer: Critical hit threshold reduced by 1. When you roll a 2 or less on damage, reroll. (Tactician) These bonuses only apply to unarmed melee attacks.

Level 5

Extra Attack. If you're a Pact of the Chain Warlock, this becomes Improved Extra Attack. Shovel gets Improved Extra Attack (except in Tactician) later either way.

Mind Screech (
during combat)
:
Psychic damage in an AOE cone. Possibly Banes targets. (Tactician) This has a
 Short Rest cooldown.
  • D6 cantrip
    Psychic damage, CHA saving throw.

Multi-attack: Strike 3 times at a Frightened creature. Possibly inflict Deep Wounds and Poison it. I used the animation of a certain devil boss for this attack and it turned out looking and sounding awesome on Shovel. (Tactician) This action can only be used once
Per Battle.
  • 1st: Normal Claws damage
    Slashing
  • 2nd: Normal Claws damage
Piercing - (Tactician) This is 1d4 regardless of your Claws damage.
  • 3rd: Normal Claws damage
    Slashing

Level 6

Arcane Strikes: Unarmed attacks count as magical.

Illusion Quickening: Magical:
After hitting a creature with an unarmed attack, you can cast an illusion or enchantment spell with a bonus action.
Illusion Quickening: Physical: After casting an illusion or enchantment spell, you can make an unarmed attack as a bonus action.

Thicker Thighs
: Difficult terrain doesn't slow you down and you can jump an additional 3m. This replaces Thick Thighs.

Abyssal Step
:
Per Turn During Combat - Teleport to the Abyss and appear at the target location. This is basically Misty Step with a cool BAMF! animation. Obviously, very much inspired by Nightcrawler's ability to teleport to hell and reappear somewhere else.

Aspects
: Infuse your claws and unlock a cantrip with a chosen aspect.

-- Aspect of Shadow
  • +1d4
    Psychic damage
  • Unlock Mind Strike Cantrip (variant of Mind Spike)

-- Aspect of the Cave Frog

-- Aspect of the Deep Bat

-- Aspect of the Phase Spiderling

-- Aspect of the Shadow Cat
  • +1d4
    Slashing,
    Bludgeoning or
    Piercing damage

Evasion.

Expert Ambusher: +3 bonus to initiative, can't be surprised and +1d4 damage to enemies that haven't taken a turn yet. While hidden or invisible, you gain Stealthy Critical (critical hit threshold reduced by 1). (Tactician) You do not gain +1d4 damage to enemies that haven't taken a turn yet.

Level 8

Infectious Dread (Interrupt): Once per
Short Rest and when you scare a target, you can use a reaction to spread the frightened condition and inflict 1d4
Psychic damage
to enemies in a 3m radius of the target you scared. (Before v2.0, this was a passive.)

Abyssal Sight: Darkvision increased to 24m, can no longer be blinded.

Umbral Escape (Interrupt): When you use Abyssal Step while
Threatened or when you
Disengage at any time, you can use a reaction to create a cloud of
Darkness. (Tactician) This has a
Short Rest cooldown.

Shadow-Empowered: While
 Lightly or
Heavily Obscured, you gain "In the Shadows". This is basically all the bonuses of the Obscured Set. Pretend Shovel is wearing all the pieces :).

-- In the Shadows:
  • Advantage on Attack Rolls and Saving Throws
  • Critical Hit threshold reduced by 1
  • +1 bonus to Armor Class and Spell Save DC
  • +3 bonus to Stealth checks
  • +1d4 damage with melee unarmed attacks

Phantasmal Spiderlings: Conjure up to 3 (
1 per spiderling) Phantasmal Spiderlings that will compel targets to attack them. When they die, they create an explosion dealing 4d6
Psychic damage
to enemies. If defeated at range, the Spiderling will first Ethereal Jaunt to the attacker and explode there instead.

Level 9

Garrote: Wrap a shadow rope around a target to silence and restrain it. Deals 3d6
Bludgeoning damage
on apply and each turn. (Tactician) This deals 1d6
Bludgeoning damage
instead.

Magical Ambush: While
 Hiding or
 Invisible, targets have
Disadvantage on saving throws against your spells.

Shapechanger: Advanced:
  • Cave Frog unlocks Enthralled Hypnosis (
    Long Rest)
    and Command.
  • Deep Bat unlocks Invisible Sight -- while invisible, your echolocation always active. You also unlock Paralyzing Ray (
    Long Rest)
    .
  • Phase Spiderling gains Displacement (like the one from Cloak of Displacement) and unlocks Cocoon (like the Ranger Spider companion) (
    Short Rest)
    .
  • Shadow Cat unlocks Enrage (
    Short Rest)
, Frenzied Pounce, and Multi-attack. The latter two can only be used while raging.

Level 10

Meenlock Shape (3
,
Long Rest)
: Become Hastened and turn into a Meenlock that can frighten enemies that come too close and paralyze targets it hits. Duration: 3 turns. (Tactician) The duration is 2 turns.

Level 11

Improved Extra Attack. - (Unavailable in Tactician) Pact of the Chain Warlocks can still unlock this at level 5 though.

Level 12

Bonded Magical Durability: In 5e, Quasits share their Magic Resistance with their summoner while near them, this is that. Shovel's summoner gets +2 to saving throws against spells while near Shovel.

Secret Bonuses and Abilities

  • If Astarion
bites Shovel, her Deep Bat will gain a boost in
    Necrotic damage and regain
    hit points
    when dealing
    Necrotic damage.
  • If Shovel consumes the Poo-Scraper found in her coffin, she'll learn Cloud of Poo-Scrapers (
     Cloud of Daggers).
  • If Shovel visits the
Acid pit in the House of Healing in Act 2, her Cave Frog will learn Noxious Fumes and will reflect 1d4 Acid damage when attacked. You must go all the way down to the pit for this to activate.
  • If you attack Shovel with a weapon coated in
Thisobald's Brewed-Up Bellyglummer, her Phase Spiderling will learn to inflict the same type of poison with her
    Poison attacks.
  • If you get BOOOAL's Blessing while Shovel is with you, she will get it as well.
  • NEW: If you combine the Nut-Buster with the 'Friend' skull and an Alchemist's Fire, you'll get an item that unlocks an action for Shovel that lets her throw a grenade once per long rest. At first, it only causes some bludgeoning damage along with applying Alchemist's Fire, but it can be upgraded by inspecting a certain grenade given to you by Damon, and then again by inspecting a certain grenade given to you by Barcus.
  • NEW: If you decide to defeat the Ox in any act, Shovel can use an action while near it to "absorb" its knowledge. This will unlock enhanced versions of her shapes once the party gets the "Gather Your Allies" spells in the Upper City. Each new shape shares abilities with the shape it's enhancing + adds some unique abilities. The enhanced shapes are:
    • Cloaker (enhanced Deep Bat) - Most of the abilities are carried over from the Deep Bat, but also adds Phantasms (3 per combat like act 2), Multi-Attack (toned down version from act 2) and Circle of Death (per combat).
    • Phase Spider (adult model) - Same abilities, but damage was bumped up and web is wider. Also gets Cloudkill (per combat).
    • Land Dragon (enhanced Cave Frog) - It's a Dilophosaurus, but it can use all the Breath Weapons that Dragonborn get. Keeps all the passives from the Cave Frog.
    • Shadow Panther (enhanced Shadow Cat) - No longer needs to enrage for pouncing and its sneak attack damage now matches a regular rogue's (+6d6 up from +3d6). It has the same damage as a Panther for bite and Jugular Strike. This one hits like a truck.
    • Obviously, these are significantly stronger than the normal shapes. You don't lose the original shapes, so you can use those if you feel the new ones are too much. Or just don't take the Ox's knowledge. Or take it for the background goals, but just ignore the spells when you get them.

Tips

Shovel's class encourages ambushing by adding bonuses when hiding or invisible and by making certain abilities cost no Sorcery Points outside of combat, so you'll want to try to enter combat with Shovel already invisible or by having Shovel open the round of combat by surprising enemies with an attack or spell.

Shovel gets reduction on landing critical hits from several sources, so having her drink an Elixir of Viciousness makes her extremely deadly. Altogether, she can land critical hits by rolling as low as 14! (In the Shadows, Murderizer, attacking a Frightened target, Stealthy Critical, Aspect of the Shadow Cat and Elixir of Viciousness). All those 1d4 attacks suddenly turn into 2d4 on a crit and can inflict devastating damage. As with other statuses, the Elixir will remain on her even when dismissed or resummoned. It will still get removed after a long rest or if defeated.

Uninstalling

To safely uninstall the mod, have Shovel first turn
 Invisible and then use
Scare on Withers. You'll get a Yes/No prompt asking if you want to uninstall. Select Yes and the modded items will be deleted + you'll get the regular Poo Scraper back. The person that summoned Shovel to do this will get to keep the summoning spell.
