Mostly based on Lumaterian's 'Impactful Backgrounds' approach, with some fixes and tweaks. Both of the mods sourced have open permissions, and so do this one. https://wryemusings.com/Cathedral%20vs.%20Parlor.html

Summary :

  • Acolyte:
    - Proficiency in Religion
    - Long rests grant you Sanctuary permanently until you attack; (A copy of Way of the Open Hand's 'Tranquility' feature, this will not stack)

  • Charlatan:
    - Proficiency in Deception
    - Can cast Disguise Self at will. Can cast Minor Illusion.

  • Criminal:
    - Proficiency in Sleight of Hand
    - Hand Crossbow, Scimitar, Clubs, Greatclubs Proficiency

  • Entertainer:
    - Expertise in Performance
    - Musical Instrument Proficiency

  • Folk Hero:
    - Proficiency in Perception
    - Advantage on Saving Throws against being Frightened; (A copy of Halfling's 'Brave' feature)

  • Guild Artisan:
    - Proficiency in Medicine
    - Chance to brew 2 potions at once if you succeed a DC 15 Medicine Check; (A copy of Transmutation School's 'Experimental Alchemy', this will not stack)

  • Haunted One:
    - Proficiency in Intimidation
    - Haunted One's Revelry : When you score a Critical Hit, all nearby enemies must succeed a Constitution Saving Throw or suffer Bleeding for 2 turns.
    - Urge Incarnate : Once per long rest, when reduced to 0 Hit Points, you regain 2d4 Health Points. If you fail a Wisdom Save DC(12), you gain Madness for 1 turn.

The Haunted One background is unlocked for all player characters, not just Dark Urge.

  • Noble:
    - Proficiency in Persuasion
    - When you roll a 1 on an Ability Check, the die is rerolled once; You must use the new roll, even if it is also a 1; (The Ability Check component of Halfling 'Luck', this will not stack)

  • Outlander:
    - Proficiency in Survival
    - 1.5 meters extra Movement Speed; (A copy of Wood Elf's 'Fleet of Foot' feature, this will stack)

  • Sage:
    - Expertise in Arcana
    - Spell Scribing of all Scrolls costs half as much; (The 'Savant' feature from all 8 Wizard subclasses, this will not stack)

  • Soldier:
    - Proficiency in Athletics
    - When you roll a 1 on an Attack Roll, the die is rerolled once; You must use the new roll, even if it is also a 1; (The Attack Roll component of Halfling 'Luck', this will not stack)

  • Urchin:
    - Proficiency in Stealth
    - Advantage on Insight checks

  • Renamed all passives background names & descriptions to fit more within the vanilla game :
- Fixed the Inspiration panel description bug from 'Impactful Backgrounds' (had to remove the tooltips from the character creation part.)

  • Modified all backgrounds to give Proficiency instead of Expertise :
- Reasoning : Expertise at level 1 was too strong for my tastes.
- Exceptions :
- 'Sage' background, who keeps 'Arcana' Expertise :
- Reasoning : the passive added (reducing scroll scribing by half) is thematic, but really niche. Having 'Arcana' Expertise adds a real value to picking 'Sage', especially when playing with a mod like 'Scroll Casting Revised' : https://www.nexusmods.com/baldursgate3/mods/10027
- 'Entertainer' background, who keeps 'Performance' Expertise :
- Reasoning : Bards, which are one of the best fit thematically for this background, already get 'Musical Instrument' Proficiency. I wanted them to still have something impactful.

  • 'Haunted One' background :
- Changed VFX and condition for "Haunted One's Revelry" (previously "Haunted One - Bloody Execution") :
- Triggers on a Critical Hit only.
- Changed the VFX to a red one instead of the previously green 'Mortal Reminder' one that was used.
- Added the "Urge Incarnate" (Passive) from 'Dark Urge - Rebirth' https://www.nexusmods.com/baldursgate3/mods/14598 with rebalanced values :
- Works like the 'Relentless Endurance' passive from Half-Orcs, but restores a bit more health (2d4), and has a chance to trigger Madness for 1 turn on a failed Wisdom Saving Throw (DC12).

  • 'Folk Hero' background :
- Modified from 'Persuasion' to 'Perception'

  • 'Noble' background :
- Modified from 'Perception' to 'Persuasion'

  • 'Guild Artisan' background :
- Modified from 'History' to 'Medicine'

  • 'Charlatan' background :
- Added the 'Minor Illusion' cantrip as well.

  • 'Criminal' background :
- Added Proficiency to 'Clubs' and 'Greatclubs' as well.
- Reasoning : Adds a bit of flavour; those fit thematically for criminal background Str alternatives to Dex weapons even if there's only 3 classes without 'Simple Weapons'.
