This mod makes a total of 6+ abilities and spells Gortash and other Bane followers use, available for players. Get them in the tutorial chest or by wearing Gortash's Gauntlet of the Tyrant.

Bane's Chosen - Ability Pack

Update 1.1: big thanks to Lunisole for providing the script to fix The Closed Fist of Bane spell. It now works as intended (grants xp after a kill and doesn't change the default values of Gortash's spell)

I started this project because i felt like we didn't have a lot of usable Bane related spells in the game, especially comparing to Myrkul (Necromancer spells) and Bhaal (Durge playthrough, Slayer..).

The goal of this mod is to balance things out a bit more by giving the God of Tyranny some well deserved love. So far, 6 abilities are available to use (3 more unlock by using them) but let me know if I missed any. I might start working on brand new Bane spells as well at some point as I've been getting a bit better at modding by making this.

Let me know if there's any bugs or glitches I missed during my testing and I'll do my best to fix it. One possible improvement would be to make them available to spellcasters (so they'll use spells slots). As they are very powerful and only ever cost an action or bonus action, I also made a "balanced" version of the mod to reduce the damage on some spells if you don't feel like killing everything too fast... but that's up to you.

So far, drinking the potion from the tutorial chest or wearing Gortash's Gauntlet of the Tyrant are the only 2 ways to get these abilities. I might change that if I find a more creative way to implement them into the game.

List of abilities (see pictures for more details)

  • The Closed Fist of Bane: summon a giant black hand above an enemy, it falls after 1 turn. It will not move but will deal 12d10 Force damage (balanced: 4d10) on impact to anyone under it (include yourself and allies so be careful). Cost: Action
  • Voice of Command: buff an ally by granting them access to the Bane's Wrath ability for one turn. It deals some slashing damage + 6d6 Psychic damage (balanced: 3d6). Cost: Bonus Action and requires concentration
  • Tyrant's Bindings: bind nearby enemies in chains of tyranny, reducing their movement by 50% for 2 turns. At the end of these 2 turns, if the chains are still attached, they will break and deal 8d8 Force damage (balanced: 4d8). Cost: Action and requires concentration
  • Invoke the Black Hand: transform into the Avatar of Tyranny for 10 turns, granting you 150 temporary hp (balanced: 50), increasing your strength by 4 (balanced: 2). You also have advantage on Strength saving throws and ability checks as well as boosted unarmed strikes. Your normal weapon strike is replace by Empowered Unarmed Strike and you gain a new reaction called Tyrannical Branding. It allows you to apply a Tyrannical Curse on any enemy that attacks you once per turn by spending a Reaction. The curse deals 8d10 Force damage (balanced: 3d10) after 2 turns if it isn't removed. You and your nearby allies also get Tyrant's Edict if you are close enough, granting you an additional Action as well as advantage on attacks. All these buffs run out after 10 turns when you transform back to normal. Cost: Action and you need to take a Long Rest to use it again
  • Manifestation of Tyranny: summon an entity for 4 turns. It cannot fight and will skip its turn but has an aura that grants you and your allies a +1 Strength buff if you are close to it. This Aura of Brutality has a different effect on enemies and deals 1d4 force damage to them when they are inflicted by this effect for the first time, and every other turn after than as long as they stand in the aura. These effects can stack if you keep summoning more Manifestations. Cost: Bonus Action
  • Aura of Terror: create a red aura around you to give disadvantage on attack rolls and saving throws to enemies around you. Cost: Action
