Hello! This article is intended to give some information about the new backgrounds, what is supposed to be new and interesting about them, and whether or not they have been "completed".

As mentioned in the main description, this mod adds 36 new backgrounds.

Full Backgrounds List

  • Arbalester - A crossbow specialist that can be hired in bigger cities to serve as another background that can have good ranged skill.
  • Atilliator - A crossbow counterpart to the bowyer, who has decent ranged capabilities and a signature event where he crafts a Masterwork Crossbow.
  • Barkeep - A beefy lowborn background that has interesting events revolving around alcohol, alcoholics, and morale.
  • Berserker - A scarier version of the wildman, with incredible HP and Fatigue, decent melee skill, poorer defenses, and most importantly, Berserk!
  • Blacksmith - An expensive but fairly skilled man that can repair equipment and has a couple of masterwork events that produce great items
  • Bodyguard - An expensive buy that is virtually guaranteed to be a good tank unit, and in some cases pushing the premier of what a melee defense character can have.
  • Bounty Hunter - A strong sellsword like background that is expensive but skilled. Like sellswords, they can be a bit fragile but also have great potential as hybrid characters.
  • Carpenter - A lowborn that has slightly poorer stamina but better than standard melee skill. Serves as a nice candidate for 0stam builds
  • Cartographer - A historian like background with pretty bad stats but excellent events. When teaming up with a historian, is capable of seeking out famed items in locations that would otherwise go undiscovered. A cartographer and historian pair makes up the bulk of the Treasure Hunter start.
  • Champion - A very rare, incredibly expensive background that is a decent Hedge Knight at worst, and has potential to be a complete juggernaut. Not intended to be hirable every playthrough, but has the potential to carry an entire campaign.
  • Cobbler - A shoemaking lowborn class that has nice events to remove the annoying clubfooted trait that plagues lowborn backgrounds. Also has a very nice event that can boost the melee defense of several brothers on your roster.
  • Con Artist - A sneaky background with some decent stats. Currently doesn't have events but in the future will have high risk, high reward scams that he can attempt depending on what the rest of your roster looks like.
  • Cook - An average background that has solid HP and slightly below average stamina. Has a few food related events.
  • Dissenter - A lowborn background with terrible stats except for an incredible resolve stat. Dissenters can make great bannerman from a pure resolve standpoint, especially given their low cost. However, they have relatively poor stats minus the resolve and have some troublesome events that the player will need to keep track of.
  • Drifter - A wandering background with decent stats. Drifters have a strange tendency to attract more drifters....
  • Druid - A wildman type background that will in the future have events dealing with some more arcane matters.
  • Falconer - A forester background that has decent ranged stats. Falcons released by the falconer reveal more of the map. The falconer can also release the falcon for no AP cost, allowing a player to get a view of the battlefield while still being able to retreat
  • Fletcher - A lowborn with ok ranged statistics, gives Peasant Militia a background to hire for bowmen besides Poachers. Fletchers can also upgrade arrow and bolt pouches to a degree otherwise inaccessible.
  • Folk Hero - A very strong, very rare background akin to the Champion. Virtually guaranteed to be a very strong character, Folk Heroes stand out by also being lowborn!
  • Gardener - A fairly basic background with a couple nice events
  • Hangman - A fairly basic background with a couple nice morale related events
  • Herbalist - A background that specializes in healing negative traits and sicknesses.
  • Lancer - A combat background specializing in freedom of movement on the battlefield. Lancers always have Spear Mastery, Polearm Mastery, Footwork, and Rotation.
  • Leper - A cripple like background that has good HP and terrible stamina and ranged capabilities. However, their melee skill is passable, and if you manage to get one to Level 11, something cool might happen...
  • Locksmith - A background that can help break into vaults and find some extra treasure after clearing camps
  • Master Archer - Think of these men as swordmasters with bows. They have incredible ranged stats and skills, but will get old over time. The main issues for them are not the stat reductions, but rather the vision loss. Can this be mitigated somehow?
  • Myrmidon - A variation of the raider, myrmidons have their own possible perkset.
  • Outlander - A background found in port cities, outlanders will eventually have a large set of cool events that involve other backgrounds. Outlanders have very variable stat spread. Though they are expensive, they have the potential to be excellent or utterly mediocre.
  • Painter - A background that deals with paints. A painter and an herbalist can make some dyes
  • Paladin - An extremely rare background fueled by holy purpose, paladins have incredible resolve that causes them to stand out even among Folk Heroes and Champions. Paladins as of now do not have events, but they could in the future...
  • Pirate - A variation of the raider, pirates have their own possible perkset.
  • Roofer - A lowborn background with slightly better than average melee defense and stamina, making decent candidates for cheap tanks
  • Skirmisher - An interesting mixed bag background, skirmishers have interesting skillsets and stat distributions, with the capability of being ranged, thrower specialists, or tanks depending on what they roll
  • Surgeon - A hard to find background that will help heal temporary injuries your brothers suffer in battle. Also has an interesting interaction with Cultists...
  • Torturer - A brutal background that can help your more timid brothers get over their fears of combat. Also has a tendency to make the company a bit more bloodthirsty overall...
  • Town Watchman - A militia type background that has potential to be a good ranged unit. Has a nice event if you manage to raise one up to Level 11.
