Shields take more damage when blocking attacks, scaling with a number of parameters.

Ranged skills deal 2 damage to shields when blocked.
Melee skills that cost 4 or less AP deal 2 damage to shields when blocked.
Melee skills that cost 5 or more AP deal 4 damage to shields when blocked.
Axe mastery increases passive AND split shield damage by 50%
Split shield works as usual
Shield Mastery works as usual
Examples:
militia spear against normal shield: 2 damage
pike against normal shield: 4 damage
woodcutter axe against normal shield: 4 damage
woodcutter axe with axe mastery against normal shield: 6 damage
militia spear against shield with shield mastery: 1 damage
pike against shield with shield mastery: 2 damage
woodcutter axe with axe mastery against shield with shield mastery: 3 damage
Philosophy
Split shield is a strange rock-paper-scissors interaction, while the game is much more dynamic elsewhere. All weapons regardless of size always do 1 damage when connecting with a shield. Even a greataxe will do 1 shield damage when using chop in vanilla! Raising default shield damage to 2 means shield mastery now increases shield durability against all weapons, instead of only against axes.
