Interview with Toasty Fresh

Since Quazzy (Winner of March's FOTM vote) hasn't been active for a while, we have decided to go on to second place; OMFG - Ongoing Modification of Firearms and Guns, by Toasty Fresh. We'd like to thank Toasty Fresh for accepting our request of an interview. You may read the interview below, and I hope you enjoy the read!

Q. What was your inspiration for creating this mod?
A. OMFG was just a place that I could offload some of my practice work in the forms of mods the community could enjoy. As an aspiring 3D artist I decided I needed much more texture practice, and so I went on gamebanana.com and downloaded a bunch of models ready to texture. I finished one of them and thought, "Hey, I know what I could do with these!" and OMFG was born.

Q. What did you find most enjoyable about the creation process of this mod?
A. I just have a load of fun making awesome textures/models. This mod really was a lot of fun to make, and in its own way, getting criticism from various 3D communities was enjoyable as well as it went towards learning new bits and bobs about 3D.

Q. What were some of the challenges you came across making this mod?
A. This was my first attempt at using Nifskope and as such, that was very frustrating trying to add my own weapon models. I spent about a week trying to work out what I was doing wrong, and they were causing crashes, the dreaded exclamation mark, and all sorts of visual oddities.

Q. What is your favorite and least favorite part of the Fallout 3 tools?
A. My favourite part is the GECK, because it is quite frankly the easiest modding tool I have ever used (admittedly I haven't tried modding many other games). But it really is a very helpful tool and I think that we're just lucky to have it for a game as amazing as Fallout 3.

As for my least favourite, I think many would agree with me when I say that NifSkope is a very aggravating program. It was obviously not the tool Bethesda themselves used for Fallout, and all kinds of crazy things will happen if you don't do something correctly.

Q. What are some other common tools you used in your development?
A. I used 3DS MAX 2009 for importing/exporting .nifs into Fallout, and Photoshop for the weapon textures. Also, a simple tablet helps a lot in texturing weapons, even if it's just a cheap one.

Q. Roughly what was the total time it took for you to put this mod together so far?
A. All of the texturing was done in the space of about a month, I guess. The actual importing and GECK work probably only took a few days.

Q. Do you plan on any more new features in your mod? Specifically anything not listed on your mods page on the Nexus?
A. OMFG will probably not progress anymore for FO3, however there will probably be a port for FNV released sometime.

Q. Do any of you have other mods you are working on or do any of you plan to create other mods as a team? If so what might those be?
A. The other day I had an idea for a mod (FNV only) where the player can pick up bits and pieces of weapons from the environment and mash them together at a workbench for their own weapon, and I think this would add a cool new element of customisation to the game. I would probably need some help for this one however, it's going to be quite an ambitious project.

Q. Tell us a little about yourself. Where you are from, what are some of your other hobbies outside of games?
A. I live in Australia and am currently attending my final years of school. Outside of videogames, I do play a lot of poker with friends regularly, and play basketball every now and then.

Q. What are some of your other favorite games if Fallout 3 isn't the only game you play? Any other game genres besides the RPG style games that Bethesda publishes?
A. Well FNV is really the meat and potatoes of what I play these days, but I do have a couple of select favourites. I do really enjoy the Assassin's Creed games, and AC2 was definitely one of my favourites. I like multiplayer FPSes and am looking forward to BRINK next month.

Q.Do you have any advice for aspiring mod authors?
A. All I can really say is that if you feel disheartened, persevere. If you think your textures/models look terrible, get on Polycount or something, get the inspiration you need from there, and it helps a lot. When I get that feeling I look at some truly excellent work, watch some tutorials, and it makes me think "I could do that!" and it helps much more than you would think.

Q. And finally, do you have anything you would like to say to our readers out there?
A. I just want to thank everybody who has endorsed or downloaded my mod, and also I want to thank all the people from Gamebanana who have consented to let me release their weapon models, namely RedRogueXIII, DeadPixel, Estuine and Ultimate Bastard. I also want to thank Darkfiregaming for the videos, they really help draw attention to the mod.

Check back next month for the FOTM interview!
