Incoherent Rambling
Unless you are very new to this game or have been living under a stone (and who can blame you with these rents) you noticed that there are a lot of variants of vehicles. Cars like the Quadra Type 66 have probably more than a dozen variants alone. A couple of those are (only) available to the player, but most are reserved for vehicles driven by NPCs or parked somewhere. Now there are multiple possible definitions of what a vehicle is in the game, but if you only take the visuals many of these vehicles are one vehicle with multiple so-called appearances. Also the game comes with methods to make vehicles (and NPCs and lots of other things) switch to a different appearance.

This is where LemurLord's original Vehicle Customizer came in (which is now hidden as it is outdated and doesn't work well on current game versions). It gave you the possibility to switch your player-owned vehicles to a different appearance. It would also remember your selection and re-apply it every time you spawned the vehicle again. It was a nice little mod, until patches broke it.

What This Is
This is basically an updated version of LemurLord's original mod, although by now I gave it a bit of my own spin. It allows you to quasi-permanently change the appearance of any of your player-owned vehicles - if it has any additional appearances that is.

To change the appearance, open your CET overlay and you'll see a custom "Vehicle Customizer" window for it. It has two drop-downs, one to select the vehicle you want to customize and one to select the appearance. The selected appearance will be saved and re-applied every time you spawn the vehicle. If you want the original appearance back, you have to explicitly select it or select "DEFAULT" in the list (result is the same).

Once you select a non-default appearance, the mod will disable Crystal Coat on the related vehicle. This was necessary to recover the functionality of this mod after update 2.2. Once you go back to the default appearance of a vehicle, Crystal Coat will be re-activated (if the vehicle had it to begin with, of course).

ABSOLUTELY READ THIS (ANSWERS TO QUESTIONS THAT ARE ANSWERED IN THIS SECTION MAY CONTAIN TRACES OF NUTS AND SARCASM)
  • You can only customize vehicles that are currently active/spawned. If the vehicle you want to customize doesn't show up in the drop-down, try calling it again. Some vehicles don't actuall register as active/spawned when you first acquire them. This applies to e.g. the Quadra Turbo V-Tech and the Beast.
  • You can only select appearances that already exist in the game, not create new appearances. It doesn't matter where the appearances come from, CDPR or mod.
  • Only ownable player vehicles can be customized. It will work for vanilla vehicles and modded vehicles, but of course modded vehicles may not have additional appearances to select.
  • The mod does not save any data in your save game, so it's completely safe to install or uninstall it at any time.
  • The saved customizations file is global, i.e. a selected customization will be applied in any and all savegames/playthroughs.
  • In case you missed it in the paragraph right above this section: Crystal Coat will not work as long as a non-default appearance is selected. This is by design!
  • If you don't understand any of these points, feel free to ask. If you don't like any of these points and want to complain, please complain to a relative or pet* or do whatever you like to do in your spare time, like eat a crayon.**

* Brutal Buzzler Technologies Inc. and its subsidiaries can not be held liable for bites, urine soaked shoes, emotional distress due to the effects of sarcasm or any other direct or indirect results of directing pointless and/or mindless complaints at pets or relatives.
** This is a joke. Brutal Buzzler Technologies Inc. and its subsidiaries do not condone crayon eating regardless of color, size or taste and can not be held liable for any stomach or other ailments resulting from crayon eating.

TL;DR
:

  • To use, have active and visible player vehicle.
  • Open CET overlay; select vehicle and appearance.
  • Customized visual = no Crystal Coat. Default visual = Crystal Coat where available.

Installation
Just drop the contents of the zip file into your game's root folder like a caveperson or use a mod manager of your choice.
