About this mod
The chance to surprise monsters and be surprised by monsters both increase as light decreases
- Permissions and credits
The following things are changed:
At full brightness, your chance to surprise monsters and be surprised is determined by your location:
- 0% chance to surprise monsters in hallway encounters (the monsters can see you coming)
- 10% chance to surprise monsters in rooms (you kick the door in)
- 10% chance to be surprised when travelling through a new area
- 0% chance to be surprised when travelling through an area you've been through before
As the light dims, the following modifiers are added to the above values:
- >50% brightness - +3% to surprise, +10% to be surprised
- >25% brightness - +8% to surprise, +25% to be surprised
- >0% brightness - +16% to surprise, +45% to be surprised
- 0% brightness - +25% to surprise, +70% to be surprised
The maximum chance to surprise monsters is reduced to 45%, while the maximum chance to be surprised is increased to 80%.
- This is because the game rolls to see if the monsters are surprised first, and only rolls to see if you are surprised after it determines that the monsters are not. The chance to be surprised is therefore potentially much smaller than it would seem.
- With the default settings, raising your chance to surprise monsters up to 65% also has the effect of reducing the maximum chance of being surprised to only 22.75%. This isn't a problem in the base game, since maximum chance to surpise happens at high light while maximum chance to be surprised happens at low light. Here, it would remove one of the major difficulties of playing at low light.
- With these maximum values, maxing your chance to surpirse monsters at 45% has the effect of capping the maximum chance of being surprised to 44%, keeping low-light tough but fair.
Trinkets and Camping Skills that affect chance to surprise and be surprised
- However, these will be more valuable than they are in the base game, since they will be the only way to reliably surprise at high light, and the only reliable way to avoid being surprised at low light.
- Remember, since the game rolls monster surprise first, any buff to your chance to surprise monsters is also a buff to your chance to avoid being surprised.
Compatability
Only one file is changed (rules.json), so there should be very few conflicts with other mods. If you're not sure, just install this mod before anything else and the worst thing that should happen is this mod will be overwritten.
Install/Uninstall
To install, just overwrite the "shared" subfolder in your game folder with the one you download here.
The original rules.json is also included if you want to uninstall. Just delete rules.json, rename rules-original.json to rules.json, and then everything should be back to vanilla.
