About this image

Thanks again to Thriff for that awesome insight on Fenris and his romance items.
--------------
Fenris tied the fabric of a green handkerchief, Hawke's favor, and fastened it around his right wrist to denote their romance. This band expressed his gratitude for the assistance, counsels, generosity and numerous acts of affection that Hawke kept bestowing upon him. Wearing it every day on his metal sleeve would spell out his own trust, devotion and constant fidelity.

His hope was that they stay together until they be ready to fully reunite. He had left Hawke after their night together, saying: "It's too much, this is too fast. I cannot do this." Fenris intended to better express his motives and purpose by clipping on the left side of his belt a small badge painted in green with the Hawke Family crest. The crest overtly expounded his free willingness to fight under Hawke's command, to help his other companions, defend them and tolerate their diverging opinions.

Hawke would understand a lot more.

Fenris had given Hadriana his word that he would let her go and once he obtained information to reclaim his life and find his sister, he broke his word. When Hawke reproached him for breaking his promise, Fenris explained that his principles were less noble than he believed. Notwithstanding, Hawke spent a night with Fenris as promised. However generous Hawke was, Fenris discovered that he felt unworthy.

Fenris' expectation had been for a moment of happiness with Hawke. He found how complete his involvement became and how the happiness he coveted was dependent on feeling worthy of happiness with Hawke. He had failed his intent.

Fenris had heard keeper Marethari saying at Sundermount: "A promise kept is one of the most powerful things in the world." He now understood that if he had kept his promise to Hadriana, he might not have felt bound to leave Hawke. Hate and rage induced by the slavers had brought him to that. He had also made a mistake by putting his reliance on abstract principles in his mind rather than acting through emulation of a person of proven worthiness like Hawke. The Hawke Family crest clipped to his belt would ever be a reminder of this.

Of course Hawke's forgiveness had spared him and erased his rage this once, as regards Hadriana, but Danarius would pursue him relentlessly. Hate, rage, fury, indignation would ensue and Fenris would taint his feelings for Hawke with those emotions and perhaps corrupt their mutual feelings. He could not risk such an outcome.

Till he had reclaimed his past and regained his memory, Fenris felt incomplete and in part uncertain of his identity. With all that had already gone wrong, and the other perils in the future from Danarius, Fenris decided that was too much to bear and that the pursuance of intimacy with Hawke had to be postponed until those matters were resolved. His primary task would be to look for his sister. It had to be so because when he saw himself through Hawke’s eyes, how he had acted in his own freedom, he felt himself to be a disappointment. His heart beat responsive to Hawke’s demands and he acutely felt an obligation to act better rather than become a burden. Fenris willed himself to satisfy Hawke's living mind by adjusting his future conduct in accordance with Hawkes' understanding of the words 'good', 'bad' and 'obligations' because they were objects of feeling and desire for both of them. Wearing the Hawke Family crest manifested his undertaking to become Hawke's equal in this regard.

After so many years of living alone, he could not foresee that their night together was to be a meeting of minds, with judgments of good and ill, demands upon one another, and presence in an ethical world common to them both. Would all men and earth and starry heavens be blotted out, and were Hawke and Fenris left alone on one single rock facing, looking at and loving each other, Fenris knew that would be a moral universe with immensities and eternities unfathomable. They would share a life whose active energy would have no limit but the intensity of interest in each other with which they were endowed.
