Black and Gold Grey Warden Armor Retexture

Nov 27, 2022 Updates:
  • Added an optional mod that retextures the craftable warden helmet in the same style. Available for both Frosty and Daimod.
  • Added the "DAI Inquisitor and Companion Warden Heavy and Medium Frosty Texture Glitch Fix" mod to fix the "rainbow pixel" glitch effect observed with the Frosty version of the mod.

Version 1.1 -
Updated to include the buttflaps present on non-HM models.

T
his mod retextures both the heavy and medium versions of the Grey Warden armors (the light version is unaffected). I wanted something in Inquisition that resembled the Dark version of Aremeta's Texture Pack for the DAO Grey Wardens of Ferelden mod, but the closest I could find was ManOfMischief's Grey Warden Armor mod, and that's for light armor only.

So I went about making my own. This mod recolors the metal to a dark gunmetal grey and additionally removes the intense shininess from the metal. The griffon on the chestplate is tinted gold, and gold trim is present on the paudrons, knee and elbow cobs, and some of the rivets and buckles. This retexture retains the vanilla tintable locations, with the exception of the metal. Cloth and leather is tintable, but the metal is not. I have additionally darkened the leather gloves on the heavy model (normally not tintable) so they contrast less with the darker metal.

Please note that this mod will very likely affect npc Grey Wardens, not just the crafted armor.

I took great pains to ensure that the Frosty version of this mod does not significantly increase load times, but of course the only machine I could test it on was my own. If you find that the frosty version of this mod does not play nicely with your load times (as Frosty is often very finicky about texture mods), I recommend using the daimod version.

Important Note:   If you encounter a "rainbow pixel" glitch effect with the Frosty version of this mod, you must use the "DAI Inquisitor and Companion Warden Heavy and Medium Frosty Texture Glitch Fix" mod included in the Main Files. This mod is a bundle-style Frosty glitch fix mod like the ones found in the DAI Frosty Texture Glitch Fixes mod compilation. Since a fix for the Warden armors doesn't currently exist, I've made my own. Huge thank you to Dmitrias for showing me how to make these glitch fix mods!

Required Mods:

While not exactly required, if you want the modded armor to look like the screenshots, you will need to use tirnoney's Opulent Tints mod. Despite what tirnoney states in the posts section,
the configurable version of Opulent Tints imports and functions perfectly well in Frosty version v1.0.6 (Beta 5) and up. Just import the daimod into Frosty and let Frosty handle the conversion. Put your custom tints in the pop-up window.

To match the screenshots, use the following RGB tints:

Lambswool        R:G:B 2:2:2
Darkened Samite        R:G:B 35:29:21
Canine Leather        R:G:B 2:2:2
Bear Hide        R:G:B Default

Lambswool was used to tint the cloth on the sides of the armor, Darkened Samite was used for the cloth strips on the front of the armor and around the neck. Canine leather is the black leather seen on the medium armor screenshots. The heavy armor screenshots use Bear Hide for the leather.

Also recommended is the Upgraded Armor Schematics mod. This upgrades the Grey Warden armor schematics to T4, making them end-game viable.

Optional Files:

The Skin That Took the Joining: This is a personal mod that I made and decided to share, since I couldn't get either of the Configurable Armor mods to work correctly in Frosty for what I wanted to do. This mod swaps the appearance of the craftable Skin That Stalks light armor with the appearance of the Heavy Warden Warrior armor-- so that your inquisitor mage can wear heavy warden armor just like in Origins. Frosty only. Please note that this will move the Skin That Stalks light schematic to the Heavy armor crafting tab! Don't worry-- your mage will still be able to wear the crafted result.

Installation:
Fbmod version: Install with the Frosty Tool Suite. For help on how to use, install, or create mods, refer to the Frosty Tool Suite Discord server or DAI Modding Discord server.
Daimod version: Install with the DAI ModManager. While the DAI Tool Suite has been abandoned on Nexus, you can still download the ModManager and find instructions on how to install mods with it on the  DAI Modding Discord server
