About this mod

This mod changes the look of Erik in homage to Toph Beifong a.k.a. The Blind Bandit from Avatar: The Last Airbender.
Rejoice A:tlA fans!

Specifically:
  • it changes Erik's eye textures to make the eyes very pale
  • it changes Erik's hair to make it black
  • it changes Erik's eyebrows to also make them black to match the hair
  • it changes the colors of some of Erik's costumes (I. the default outfit, II. the Hooded Stranger outfit and III. The Viking) to feature green, lime green and cream white colors, inspired to Toph's clothing.

How to install

  • If you don't have it yet (I mean srsly tho??), go install Project Rebuild
  • Next, copy this mod's .pak file into <steamapps>\common\DRAGON QUEST XI S\Game\Content\Paks\ (where <steamapps> is typically C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\ depending on your installation)

Files and compatibility

EYES: this mod changes the texture file of Erik's eyes (the iris), so it's obviously not compatible with any other mod that changes Erik's eyes

HAIR: this mod changes all the texture files of Erik's hair, so it's obviously not compatible with any other mod that changes Erik's hair

EYEBROWS: this mod changes all the texture files of Erik's face (except the one for the Hooded Stranger, aka T_P002_Face_E001_CS01_C) because the eyebrows color is stored on the face textures (yeah, I know, I'm not a fan either) so it's not compatible with any other mod that changes Erik's face, face color etc.

CLOTHING: this mod changes 3 of the the texture files of Erik's wear, so it's obviously not compatible with any other mod that also changes those specific wears

Why this mod?

For the lulz

Long story long:

So I was trying, and for some still obscure and unknown reason (maybe only fathomable by mike9k1 among mortals), failing at creating a working eye color texture for characters.

I was testing with Erik's textures.

The game had stopped crashing, so apparently I was doing something right, but what I was getting instead solid light gray, where a beautiful eye iris texture would have shown.

Still hopeful, I tried for help in the Yggdrasil Discord Server, where I posted the undesired result.

'Twas this:

(The tawny colored hair and eyebrows were a desired effect of a previous successful experiment; my problem were obviously the gray eyes)

That's when kmxn chimed in:

I mean...
It was simply perfect! Not only it was quite spot-on, but also I loved how it happened to fit Erik, who is a thief.

For those who don't know, the "blind bandit" is the wrestling nickname of a character from Avatar: The Last Airbender, Toph Beifong. This character is blind and she has very pale eyes as a visual cue to that (hence the above joke).

I mean... I had to.

But wait, what was the texture problem, you might ask?

... Well, the gods of modding are still the only ones that know what the problem was (and probably mike9k1 too). I certainly don't.

(But if you also have a similar problem do check out the great texture modding tutorial I myself followed on Yggdrasil's website and head over to their Discord server, because they are the best)

The future of this mod

Carpe diem.
And with this I mean, I don't know. While there certainly are many exciting possibilities and ideas, I cannot (and generally will not) make any promises for the future. This is why I like my mods to have a minimum level of quality and polish when I make any release.

But, do not let this stop you if you have suggestions or ideas! Go right ahead and post a comment! I'd love to hear what you have in mind.
