About this image

A real-life map of the Fallout 3 Capital Wasteland. Courtesy of Google Maps.

The "A" marker in the northwestern portion of the map is Raven Rock, Pennsylvania.

In the Fallout 3 game world, Raven Rock, Pennsylvania is located in the northwestern portion of the map, and Washington, D.C. is located near the southeastern portion of the map. Using these two locations as a reference is how the map location was narrowed down to what is seen.

Again, as the Fallout 3 Capital Wasteland is not 100% to-scale when compared to real-life, this map is a rough estimate, based on the two locations of Raven Rock, Pennsylvania and Washington, D.C. that are seen in-game.

The Fallout 3 Capital Wasteland covers an area of approximately a quarter of this map, with real-life locations moved around from their respective locations to fictional ones. For example, in reality, Raven Rock, Pennsylvania is twice as far away than what is seen in the game. In the game, it's much, much closer to Washington, D.C. than it actually would be in reality.

If the Fallout 3 Capital Wasteland were 100% to-scale, it would appear as something very similar to this map.

I look at it this way: In most Fallout games, they don't really try to make the maps to scale, they just add the major areas (Fairfax, Washington D.C., All the Metro Stations, Bethesda etc.) and stuff the area around it. They did the same with New Vegas. You had Goodsprings, Las Vegas, Lake Mead, Hoover Dam etc. and areas to fill in the gaps between them.

Man, imagine navigating the Capital Wasteland if its much closer to scale.

I looked it up once before, there's alot that is not even close.....(lol) at least some of the roads are acurate. However the positions of alot of the major locations in the game are way off, or fiction anyway. But hey, it's a game, if they went with reality the map would have been much, MUCH larger.

I'm quite familiar with the DC Area and let me tell you, there is hardly anything accurate about Bethesda's version which I found a bit odd since Bethesda Softworks is in this area too, up in Rockville, I think. Still this map could be helpful to modders.

P.S. Who names a company after the area they started in then moves to another town? Its like naming your company Las Vegas Construction then moving to Fresno and keeping the name.

But if you look near the center, you see Olney, which is right near the top of the map in-game. This makes the game-map not really based off real-life maps. This is a good reference still. Good job.

Nice, thanks for this. Could help a lot of people who are not familiar with the DC area that are making location based mods and want it to be placed accurately.
