About this image

From The Personal Recollection of Star Paladin Cross

After the hurried trip across DC, we had hoped for a short rest at Little Lamplight before taking on Vault 87.  That was not to be.  Within a couple of hours of our arrival, 'Mayor' MacCready's lookouts  reported that Verti-Birds grounded close by the entrance, and left behind two squads of Enclave troops.

They showed no interest in entering the caverns, but established a defensive position in the area out front.  The children of these caverns were concerned but not overly much, having repelled many attempted incoursions by Slavers, Supermutants and Raiders before now.

But, as far as anyone knew,  they had never faced power armor and heavy flamethrowers before.  However much the Brotherhood or any other civilized group would reject the use of such against children, it was unlikely that the Enclave would show similar restraint.

Our own group was concerned for both this and other reasons.  We had kept our journey out here as quiet as possible, to the point of only communicating when any transmissions could be screened with those from other settlements along the way.  Only a few people knew we were heading for Vault 87, or so we thought.

In any case, our plans had changed.  Instead of the three of us running Murder Pass and entering Vault 87, Walker had decided that she would do so on her own.  I often disagreed with Jiao, but we were united in rejecting that idea.

Walker was unmoved.  She pointed out that she was the expert in Vaults AND Supermutant lairs, that the trip in was (hopefully) a quick "hit and run", and that the Lamplighters would need high-powered help if the Enclave moved in.  So we would remain to Instruct the Lamplighters in anti-PA tactics and, if it came to that, help repell any attacks.  Meanwhile, Walker would penetrate Vault 87, grab the G.E.C.K., and rejoin us.  At that stage, and depending on the Enclave's actions, we would consider our next move.

A simple plan.  But it has often been said that no plan survives contact with the enemy.

not saying it's impossible, but I do wonder sometimes how has a settlement of kids been fending off raiders and muties while some larger, more well defended places get overrun? Also, if they have been so good at defending Little Lamplight on their own, why are the people in Big Town so...bad at doing it?

      Fair questions all.

Much of it I attribute to Little Lamplight being a far more defensible position than most places. Whether through the front door or Murder Pass, any incursion to LL would have to go single file for most of the way in. With a bunch of kids with assorted firearms and boobytraps waiting at the far end.

Yeah, good luck with that one, guys.

In terms of basic defenses and restriction of access, the only place technically better would be a Vault - IF one forgets about most Vaults being designed to torture / kill their occupants.

Rockopolis probably compared well with Little Lamplight, and might even have been better, but that was brought down by internal betrayal, basically. Hamilton's Hideaway is another possible contender, but we have no idea what brought that place down (my personal guess is the wildlife, but that IS only a guess).

On the other hand, I'd rate Big Town as definitely "Poor" on the defensive scale AND for self-sufficiency. Yeah, they have a vague semblance of walls and a bottleneck thing going at the entrance, but it isn't what I consider a secure locale. Far from it.
