Windows tweaks and some hardware info.

SSD/HDD
Basic info about hard disc.

SSD is reading data much faster than HDD. If you still use HDD, consider buying SSD, seriously, it makes huge difference for both - games and OS. Remove useless software, especially if its running in the background or starting with the system.  If you use HDD you might defragment it. SSD doesn't require defragmentation.

Disable Steam Overlay

In general it's worth to make sure that there's no unnecessary apps running in the background, so relativelly all system resources are available for the game. Steam Overlay is one of 215643623 things that can make Fallout 4 stutter or crash, so It's the best option to turn it off.

NVIDIA Overlay is not necessary in general, it migh consume some resources, it's good idea to turn it off, so it won't start along with the game again.

[Optional] Experimental tweak for Windows 10. You do it on your own responsibility! I never had any problems with this settings but it is common sense to warn against tuning up GPU/CPU settings. It might be dangerous for the hardware

What is GPU acceleration?

Turning on this setting changes the way that WDDM (Windows Display Driver Model) works. Theoretically it should reduce lag, especially on low-end and mid-end CPUs, by moving a part of the scheduling tasks to the dedicated GPU to relieve CPU.

Some players didn't notice any difference, some other says it helps with performance. The best way is to test it yourself.

To avoid FPS drops in you Fallout 4 game you must not install mods that are directly affecting performance.
  • More NPC means more FPS consumption. No more, no less. Adding new NPC or increasing textures quality for characters will make the game need more VRAM.
  • Lighting mods, as more lights, especially those casting dynamic shadows, as more requiring game becomes.
  • Settlements mods causes huge FPS drops in settlements, especially if there is too many items and object to render. Try not to trash your settlements, build only what's necessary.
  • Lowered weapons and animation mods will affect performance. Nothing serious, but still.
  • Mods messing with precombines meshes. (authors usually warns users about precombines, also you can use FO4Edit to check if mod has anything to do with precombines).
  • NPC behaviour mods are performance heavy.
  • Increasing spawns (more NPC = more FPS drops in specific areas, especially painful in Boston and settlements).
  • Hi-Res textures (4K/8K with good compression format like BC7 or BC5, but on low-end and mid-end systems also 2K might be too heavy).
  • ENBs ENB consumes system resources, it's obvious, because it adds great visual effects to the game. It might give you 5FPS or 10FPS drop, sometimes much more, but in general ENBs always hits performance.
  • Reshade (...is much more lightweight than ENBs but still, it adds new effects so it requires some resources to work).
  • Script heavy mods (can cause script lags, eventually resulting in CTDs. Not all scripted mods are causing FPS drops but there is always more or less noticeable performance hit). Aviod heavily scripted mods.
  • Improving shadows and effects (quality, amount, range or dynamics).
  • Sound improvement (they might affect performance slightly, usually nothing serious).
  • Tones of user interface mods also might cause some problems with performance during the game, because they also contains scripts or animations.

    Creation Club Content

Do not try to remove these files from Data folder, there's a risk that Steam will try to reinstall the whole game if it won't detect them. But there's much safer option to get rid of these addons, just install Shorty by Slavemaster4u. This mod replaces CC files with blank ones, so Steam will detect them as it should but they won't show up in game. Remember to backup files first, better safe than sorry.

    Cleaning DLCs

I never skipped this step, but you can do it. Cleaning DLCs might cause some bugs, actually, most of cleaning bugs comes from this process. It depends of the software version you use. Sometimes it's worth to use older version of the program. You should check xEdit Discord channel for detailed informations about cleaning master plugins. Personally, I never had any CTDs or noticeable bugs in game, but honesty commands me to warn you about potential consequences. Skipping cleaning DLC plugins won't cause any troubles.

    TL:DR
    Spoiler:
    Show

    • Backup all ESMs of Data folder (FO4 root directory).
    • Run FO4EditQuickAutoClean.exe.
    • Select ONE DLC of the list.
    • Press OK and wait.
    • After its finnished exit the program.
    • Do exactly the same for all DLC ESM plugins.
    • Create somewhere new Data folder.
    • Move all processed ESMs into newly created Data folder.
    • Pack that Data folder with processed ESMs into ZIP package.
    • Install new ZIP package with Mod Manager.
    • Restore original ESMs to the Data folder in Fallout 4 root folder.
    Note:
    • Every DLC must be processed separately.
    • Do not touch Update.esm and Fallout4.esm.
    • Load packed ESMs as your first mod, just after official DLCs.

To clean masters from ITM and UDR records run FO4EditQuickAutoClean, then select ONE master file on the list and start processing. You must repeat this procedure for each DLC. It won't take long. xEdit always backup files and moves them into FO4Edit Backup folder, you can find it in MO2 override folder or Data folder (if you don't use any mod managers).

After process is done, put all processed ESMs to the newly created Data folder on your desktop and pack it into RAR package, install with Mod Organizer 2 and load as very first. After this you can restore old, unprocessed ESMs into Fallout4/Data directory. This way will allow you to use cleaned masters without replacing original ones.

    Precombines check

Simple filters to check precombines in worldspaces. However, precombined meshes can be broken in many ways, so this won't make miracles for you, it might just help a bit in this one aspect.

***After processing finish there should be only Fallout 4 and DLC ESMs on the list. If any other mod appears then it's dealing with precombines and should be removed, unless you have quite strong PC. Probably the best idea to avoid messing with precombines is not to install esp/esl/esm files and meshes, textures itself are safe.
