About this image

Dear Marie,

You'll never receive this letter, but there are thoughts I must express before the sun fades and I'm lost to the sands. For days I've been wandering the desert, circling my steps that are brushed from the Earth's surface with each passing gust over the dunes, waiting for a friendly face to come along and guide me back to California. The NCR should have never come here. What is there to defend? Dunes, rocks, sandstorms, and dehydration? Caesar can have it, and he will...

Our mission failed because of me. We camped out a half-mile from The Fort, waiting for Caesar to poke his head out of his tent. He did on several occasions, and each one my squad anxiously awaited for me to pull the trigger, and each time I refused. I panicked over the wind speed, wind direction, the erratic movement of our target, the range... Everything they taught me to keep in check. So, we kept waiting.

On the third night, curious Nightstalkers circled our camp for hours. A few came in close enough to taste Helbourne's bowie knife, but it seemed like each one he killed spawned three more sets of eyes in the darkness. We were entirely surrounded, but were restricted to our blades. We dealt with them like we had dealt with hundreds of packs before; let a couple get in close, slice 'em, wait for the next... We had no idea how many there were. They swarmed us. We put up a fight, but they just kept coming... One got a hold of Helbourne's neck, thrashed away at his jugular. I already had a couple around me and reacted with my firearm. I put a single bullet into it's skull, and the crack spooked the rest enough to run off. Helbourne was already dead.

No more than a minute later, another shot was fired. King took a round to his skull, blew his brains all over the tent. Before we knew it, we were ambushed once again. This time by the Legion. My squad didn't a chance, and neither did I... so I ran. I grabbed my rifle and bag, and dipped into the darkness the first chance I got. I've been walking for two days now, and can safely say I wasn't followed. It doesn't matter though. This damn desert has swallowed me whole.

I love you, Marie. I love you and Kevin more than there are stars in the sky. I'm sorry that I can't be there to help raise him.

Forever yours,
Rex
