2nd pass on the textures and they're looking really good now IMO. Still a WIP, need to go darker with the brass case, and blend the dirt a bit more so its not as abrupt.

The reason you want dark diffuse is because how it is interpreted as a non-falloff color by the engine. Metallics use extreme Fresnel falloff, which diffuse counters. Instead, much of the shine and color will come from specular and cubemap. Bethesda already made nearly all the cubemaps needed for the metals that exist - and you can also compensate with a very, very slight tint on the diffuse to get whichever type of metal you want.
