    If you want to mess around with some hair variations, try Wasteland Salon . The readme describes the changes to texture files (which apparently have a lot to do with the way the hair appears and may be why the color looks different in different styles.)

      I had to go through so many colors and hair styles to finally get it. I really can't imagine why a color looks different from one hair style to the next.

      There are things that I don't understand either about normal maps and alphas and specular reflection. Some of it kinda makes sense if one style has different reflection and absorption properties, then the color would look different. Still it is baffling.
