About this image

Yeah, 5 months long vacation in the Mojave Wasteland seems enough, and it's time to return to Boston.

Unfortunately the teleporter malfunctioned this time, and Katie ended up in Texas. Well, at least she got there with all her toes in place - you know, teleporter malfunctions can be quite dangerous. So, with all of her eleven toes and other parts intact, Katie started to think how to get back to the Commonwealth on foot.

Not that she didn't like Texas or anything, on the contrary - Katie loved it a lot, but still. Anyway, the most realistic option was joining a trade caravan as a guard or something and hope for the best. Plus, it was a great opportunity to get earn some caps, since Katie lost all the money she raised working as a porn actress in New Vegas. Yeah, talk about gambling problems. Oh well. Luckily, Happy Trails Company needed experienced mercs for the trip, and it was Katie's ticket out of Texas.

And so they set off. The trip was perfectly fine, until the caravan left Texas. In Oklahoma they were ambushed by some crazy ghoul cultists. No less than three dozens of them accompanied by ferals of all sorts. They killed all caravaners, and would've killed Katie, if not for the Wrecking Crew.

An armored vehicle appeared out nowhere and opened fire on the cultists. Those ghouls had no chances against the auto cannon firing 500 high explosive 25 mm rounds per minute. With most of the cultists turned into fine red paste, the crew dismounted and finished the job. Wrecking Crew was a colorful bunch, to say the least. Hale - a totally badass lady in her mid forties - was an ex Midwestern Brotherhood operator and the Crew's leader. She was wandering across the wastes doing all kinds of merc jobs after the midwestern chapter was disbanded, until she met a ghoul Russian named Victor. Victor - Hale's second in command - was a former Soviet marine assigned to guard duty at the USSR embassy in DC, and a gun for hire with more than 200 years of combat experience. Then there was Reinhardt. First generation supermutant with the voice oddly similar to one of the TV newscasters from times before the war. He's been here for quite a while, and according to himself he has seen it all - fall of the Master, the Chosen One, Enclave's defeat at the Jefferson Memorial, all of it! Also, there was Goris, a scholar of sorts. And a talking sentient deathclaw - a result of one of the Enclave's many experiments. He also knew the Chosen One, and loved to tell stories about his old friend. And, believe it or not, ED-E was there too!

ED-E recognized Katie, and told the Wrecking Crew about her. They were kind enough to lend her a hand and offered Katie to travel with them, since they were on the way east anyway. On their trip to the East Coast they drove through Chicago, where they found a secret Enclave base, using data stored inside ED-E's databanks, and destroyed it. Yeah, that was something to see. Then there were the country roads of West Virginia. The place had pretty bad reputation, so the Crew drove through it as fast as Sally (their vehicle) could. After weeks of travel, they finally reaced the southern edge of the Glowing Sea. This was where they thanked each other for the great time spent together, wished each other luck and parted ways. The Wrecking Crew wanted to visit New York, and Katie could easily travel through the Glowing Sea on foot.

      "Muskogee"

Hale is from Canada, that's all I know.

      "mountain Momma"

Nope, only bugs. Reality breaking bugs.

      Thank you, friend.

Fallout games are all interconnected on the large scale, so why not to bring it to a whole new level, right?

      Thank you.

Nice story to lead into Katie's return to the Commonwealth. One small thing made me twitch a little, though with you not having grown up learning US geography it is understandable. NY (both the city and the state) is between West Virginia and Boston, Massachusetts (The Glowing Sea is east-northeast of Connecticut and Rhode Island) by land. That said, nicely written and no 4th wall broken that I noticed (everything touched on either existed already within the Fallout IP or fit easily enough ).

I know where NY is - I checked the map while I was writing this bit, lol . It's like they've reached the Glowing Sea, said goodbye to Katie and returned to NY. It's a clumsy moment in general (because it has to be explained), but I needed New York to be the Crew's final destination, because come on - it's New York.

And speaking of 4th wall breaking references:

      1) Hale is an homage to Jennifer Hale
      2) Midwestern Brotherhood disbanding is a reference to Bethesda retconing a lot of Fallout lore
      3) It's implied that Reinhardt sounds like Ron Perlman and is in fact the narrator of Fallout games
      4) West Virginia having bad reputation is a Fallout 76 reference obvs

And the whole idea with the Wrecking Crew is an homage to Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel. (nobody loves this game except me... sigh...)

This reminded me uncannily of Fallout Tactics Great memories though. You should've made her journey - and companions- into a seperate series Great music btw.

It's Fallout potpourri of sorts. Classic games, Tactic, Brotherhood of Steel, all of them really. Even found a place for Fallout 76. The Wrecking Crew in particular is inspired by Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel.

      "seperate series"

      Maybe I will.
