About this image

Working on a new landscape overhaul. Here is a new mud texture with small puddles. This is a demonstration of using parallax occlusion mapping, with a height map, to fake depth.

Unfortunately, the game only support parallax occlusion mapping on decals, so these will have to be hand placed around the commonwealth. Might be worth it though, to add a bit of depth to the landscape here and there.

What do you think?

I never thought I would say this ... but this is some damn amazing looking mud!

Really like what you've been doing so far with this mud, your bushes and now your rocks as well. I can just imagine seeing these textures around the Chestnut Hillock Reservoir amongst other wet and boggy places!

Looks absolutely great. How high is the performance impact of this and how many different ground textures with parallax occlusion have you planned?

Thanks. I had to check the performance real quick. I actually though it was pretty much none, but not quite. Still pretty low though. Couple of frames maybe, depending on your GPU and resolution. The decals will also consume a bit of extra VRAM of course, but I'm always very careful about optimizing.

I plan to replace all vanilla textures for the terrain, and will probably create decals alongside them. Maybe 20 - 25?

Think I'll start by covering the areas closest to Sanctuary. Maybe release an early version once that is covered.

Sounds really good. I think Bethesda should have included this kind of stuff anyways for the PC version. I'll definitely check out your mod when it's done. Between, what do you do to optimize textures?

Seems cool! Would definitely help some spots in the commonwealth feel dirtier and more lifelike. Especially if you made a version with boot imprints in the mud and littered them around settlements and high traffic areas.

I think a bunch of these would look especially good in places like the various junkyards in the game.

Boot prints are definitely a good idea.
