About this image

Gun For Hire, followup to Feb 2020s Mod of the Month, Crime and Punishment, is still on its way! Though admittedly, I still do not have an exact release date for you yet.

Here are the most recent items of importance, per update news.

1) Discord Release Candidate testing round one is complete and a new update was deployed to the testers. What is important about this piece of news, aside from the fact that small bugs were fixed, is that they have confirmed the auto-updater no longer bricks the Assistant or the Squad Members, so the updater has been fixed. For you this means, you wont have to worry about updating from the initial Nexus release (v1.0.0) to whatever follows in the future!

2) There are still some small things being worked on, in terms of content for that initial release, just to beef it up some more, but also, optimization and ease of use (quality of life) changes are being made, based on tester feedback, so you can be assured of a mod that is relatively easy to use.

3) KovichCrow is recording the final round of male client audio files (as I write this no less!), so they should be done soon and in my hands to get into the mod.

4) Thuggysmurf is in the process of collecting footage from his tests with the mod and will be assembling a preview trailer that will be available (when it is done) ahead of the mod's actual release.

Thats about it for now... more to follow. As always, any questions you have, I'm available to answer. :)

Just had the pleasure of watching ThuggySmurf's teaser for this. Beautiful job on the cleanup of the voice overs. Looking forwards to playing G4H even more now.

Cutting up the last of the audio, which I have all of it on-hand. And then one final round of bug tests on Discord. Its so close the releasing here, one could almost taste it.

Just curious if you'd care to elaborate a bit on the vertibird. Will yours be compatible or integrate with Flyable Personal Vertibird? Did you find a way to overcome the engine's limitations and make the vertibird more controllable?

Its a vertibird, like the fast travel one really. Nothing crazy like that flyable one, no.
It has a holotape entry with a bunch of presets - like fly back to base (whether you are on it or not), fly to job site (some jobs allow the bird to fly to them, when you are onboard) and summon vertibird to your location for a pickup.

But aside from that, its no different than a regular smoke grenade vert, just using a holotape instead. And of course, my multifollower system is keyed to it specifically in terms of seating arrangements (you can configure this, somewhat, by choosing YOUR position, either as door gunner or as pilot and the squad will shift their seating to accommodate your selection).

For those curious, the landing pad for the bird is ONLY accessible from within the Gun For Hire office or by fast travel. Looks like this from the roof of your office.

Here is the player seating in the pilots position.

And here is the squad, taking pilot, copilot and passenger seating (the player, unseen, is actually in the door gun position).

I would like to suggest jobs, more of endgame after finishing the main quest

    1) When enemy with the BOS -
Help ghouls escape from brotherhood of steel remnants' encampments who became slavers of ghouls and supermutants to earn money, which could also be squadmates.
    2) When enemy with Institute
Rescue abducted settlers and assassinate the synths imposters while being accompanied by random settlers who are the loved ones of the abducted settlers and really know who is synth and who is their real friend/family.
    3)When enemy with Railroad
Kill ex-Railroad operatives who are now gunners assassins who are going to ambush you as you travel in the commonwealth. They use any weapons except pipe and pistols, they use landmines, and they have dogs.

I don't touch the factions or the story at all and likely won't going forward either - jobs are difficult enough to make (and get voiced for free) without having to take a bunch of game state variables into account.

I've had my eye on this one for a while now, and I'm psyched to try it. Others could learn a thing or two from your commitment to quality, as well - so kudos for that.

I did wanna confirm something, though, as I'm genuinely not sure if I imagined it - I remember (I think?) reading about a specific job type called 'sniper hunt' or something like that, where you would have to hunt down and battle an NPC with a long-range rifle and the associated perks. The idea reminded me of the 'End' boss fight in Metal Gear Solid 3. Anyway I know it sounds strange but I can't recall if that was a stated feature of the mod, or simply a user suggestion - or even where I read any of it.

Yep, you recall correctly - there is indeed a job to hunt down a sniper. And there is a job where you are hired to BE a sniper, overwatch, for a team of NPCs raiding an enemy occupied hospital where they hope to steal medical supplies and escape while you handle taking out the enemies ahead of their ingress and any that chase them at egress.

Here is a list of ALL of the jobs that the assistant will hand out to the player - this is not ALL of the jobs in the mod - some are randomly found - but they are the ones you can be given. And, they are infinitely replayable, with loads of randomization in their outcomes - right here, in this list of 27 jobs, there are about 120 or so random outcomes possible.

Awesome, I'm glad I didn't imagine it, as I really love the idea. The 'overwatch' mission sounds great, as well - you don't often get the chance to play a 'supporting' role in firefights in Fallout 4 as you're usually the one being shot at, so this is is a welcome addition for me.

Yeah, I tried to add that in a few jobs, being support not the "hero".

Overwatch, Bodyguard, Securing the Perimeter, these three for sure have you in a supporting role, which as you note is something really lacking in this game.

Is this, is this going to be a Bounty Hunter mod? Say it isn't so..

It has elements of that, yes.

But it is so much MORE than that.

Think the bounty hunter missions from Crime and Punishment, where you go to kill a target OR capture them and deliver them to Diamond City Security - that is in here too - but now throw in some Nick Valentine type missions where you have to go do this or that. And then throw in some settlement radiant style missions on top of that. And round it out with some mercenary style missions as well. Shake it all up and pour it out into a mod. Note, as of this moment, there are 34 job archetypes, with around 120 possible outcomes between them AND they are inifinitely replayable!

And then! For added measure, add in a custom multi-follower system, so you can hire a team of 3 NPCs to travel with you on your missions - if you imagine them as mini-Heather Casdins, you are right on the mark. And then, put a cherry on top of it by adding in a player owned vertibird system, that as Thuggysmurf says, "This ability to pilot a vertibird is freakin' awesome! - The veritbird is a game changer. Alleviates the grind of traveling back to Diamond City."

And! You run your "business" from an office (an interior player home like Home Plate is - fully customizable, but NPCs cannot be assigned to it) that is just outside the main gates of Diamond City - you even hire an assistant who is responsible for finding and handing out your jobs! And this is also where your vertibird calls it's home.

THAT is what Gun For Hire is. In a nutshell. But of course, it is SO much more than what it appears here in this brief "in a nutshell" overview.

From what I played of it during the initial test release on Nexus (from watching his update vids it has gotten even better than when it was on here in early Beta) it is a bit of bounty hunter, a bit of bodyguard, a bit of hired hitman, some search and rescue, and allot of "local trash" cleanup. Basically small time, short term mercenary work. With a heavily customizable office/player home to work out of. :D

Edit: Got Ninjaed by the modmaker. Lol. Hi Joe. /wave
?put a cherry on top of it by adding in a player owned vertibird system,
      ...

Please not require BoS to be in the Commonwealth. Please not require BoS to be in the Commonwealth. Please not require BoS to be in the Commonwealth. I fucking hate them as much as I hate the Gunners and Institute.

      Nope!

The availability of the player owned vertibird is solely a function of your "reputation" as a gun for hire being high enough that someone wanting to flee the Gunners comes to you with an interesting proposition to steal one of their vertibirds. The BOS, Institute, Railroad and Minutemen are not taken into account in any way within this mod - it is literally meant to be played like an alt-start mod, though, as you know from playing the beta, its more of an alt-after-start / alt-middle, where the sole survivor simply chooses to be a merc like Hawthorne instead of (or in addition to) anything else. Nothing in this mod, so far, relies on any faction, outside of enemy targets within Raiders, Gunners, Super Mutants and Children of Atom.

Looks and sounds awesome. I really enjoyed the Regulators in Fallout 3 and have wanted something similar for Fallout 4.
