Even beforethe founding of the New Commonwealth in fall 2288, it was obvious that most of the ambitious future projects would need more than just good intentions to be
successful. Short on natural resources and overall infrastructure the political body had to rely on salvage, exploration and research. Thus three institutions were established in
the very beginning.
The Agency of Exploration, Geology and Geography has been tasked with exploring unknown areas, first evaluation of infrastructure in such areas, searching for natural resources of all kind and mapping of the investigated zones. The Advanced Research and Development Labs are a mixture of a classic Think Tank and scientific research laboratory. They’re divided into several sections, dealing with different topics – from optimized food-plants to high-level AI research. The Bureau of Civil Defense got it’s name from the uniforms worn by it’s employees. Yet it’s task is completely different from the pre-war counterpart. The CD tries to “clean up the Commonwealth”, by collecting corpses of dead humans, Ghouls and whatever can die. Those corpses are burnt in ArcJet which is nowadays a crematorium. Furthermore the CD collects radioactive waste and soil, which is then transported to the military facility in Andale. While these institutions served their purpose well, in march 2289 the New Commonwealth Post Office Department was founded. The idea behind it was to connect the settlements via a network of “mailmen” delivering private messages and information of all sorts. As a special feature this service is offered to all people in the NCW, even raiders! The only condition is that members of the NCWPOD are flagged piece envoy and must not be harmed by anyone – for the sake of retaliation by the armed forces. With the reformation of the armed forces in 2291 the Commonwealth State Police was hived off and became an independent, civil service. Its HQ stayed at the Boston State Prison where police officers and sheriffs are trained. Furthermore there is a training pact between the New Commonwealth and the fast growing Diamond City for its own police forces. At last, in early 2292, the Commonwealth Bureau of Infrastructure and Transportation was established. This became necessary, when breakthroughs in research on construction robots enabled to re-establish railway tracks, locomotives and the Nuka World Transit Express. Additionally the CBIT is tasked with “repairing” streets and evaluating possibilities for large projects, such as the planned big water purifier near Sunshine Tidings.
