About this mod

BugOut replaces the insects of the Commonwealth with other creatures for people with insect phobias. Spiritual successor to BugOff.

Permissions and credits
THIS MOD IS NO LONGER BEING UPDATED.  IT WORKS WITHOUT ISSUE, BUT DOES NOT INCLUDE THE DLC INSECTS.  I WILL NOT BE MAKING ANY FURTHER UPDATES OR PATCHES FOR IT.  I HAVE BEEN CONTACTED BY SOMEONE OFFERING TO UPDATE IT FOR THE DLCS AND WILL ADD A LINK TO THEIR WORK HERE ONCE THEY PUBLISH IT.

CREDIT WHERE IT'S DUE, SON

First and foremost, this mod is based on BugOff by tgspy.  I actually made this myself from scratch, but without his mod I would've never known where to even begin.  As someone with a rather severe insect phobia, BugOff is a godsend.  However, it's also a bit of a curse.  First, it replaces all the bugs it removes with Radroaches, and I'm phobic of those too.  Second, it greatly lowers the difficulty of the game because where there used to be an ambush of 3 legendary radscorpions, now there's 3 regular radroaches.

YOU CAN CALL IT "THE BACKGROUND" BUT I CALL IT A "PHOTOBOMBING OPPRITUNITY"

BugOut seeks to remedy these problems.  Instead of just replacing everything with Radroaches, I've edited the leveled lists to replace each insect with something of roughly equal difficulty.  This will (mostly) maintain difficulty while eliminating bugs - including the vast majority of Radroaches - from the game.

I CAN'T BELIEVE THEY'RE NOT BLOATFLIES!

The exact changes are:
  • Radroaches have been replaced with a basic Molerat.
  • Bloatflies have been replaced with leveled Molerats.
  • Bloodbugs have been replaced with a basic Protectron.
  • Stingwings have been replaced with a basic Mr. Gutsy.
  • Legendary versions of Bloodbugs and Stingwings are replaced with the highest versions of their replacements (Guardian Protectron and Colonel Gutsy.)
  • Radscorpions have been replaced with leveled Deathclaws.

GREAT BIG HUGE IMPORTANT NOTE YOU TOTALLY HAVE TO READ ON PENALTY OF DEATH:

This mod edits leveled lists only.  There are some bugs (insects, though also bugs too, lol) that Bethesda, in their infinite wisdom, manually placed in specific areas.  For example, the two radroaches that spawn on either side of the street right before the first turn in Sanctuary.  I do not have the modding skills to remove these bugs.  However, fortunately, these are rather few and far between, i.e. 99% of the bugs are spawned via leveled lists and this mod DOES replace those.  Accordingly, DO NOT post anything asking me to fix staticly placed bugs.  If you're seeing bloatflies and radscorpions all over the place, let me know, but if it's just like 1 out of every 50 that isn't being replaced, then the mod is working as intended and I will NOT provide support for those few stragglers.

OTHER SLIGHTLY LESS IMPORTANT NOTES THAT YOU SHOULD TOTALLY READ ANYWAY:

There are 4 types of molerats and 4 types of bloatflies, so those are direct analogs.  The level ranges may be slightly different, but it shouldn't increase difficulty much, if any.  There are, however, 7 types of Radscorpions and 8 types of Deathclaw.  To make these translate, I simply skipped the 7th type of deathclaw, Chameleons, because frankly they're harder to fight than Mythics sometimes.  Before anyone asks, yes, I wanted to change either Stingwings or Bloodbugs into raiders instead of making them both robots.  The problem with this is, it would require that all the replaced raiders be EXACTLY alike.  It'd be very immersion breaking to see 6 of the exact same raider hanging out in the middle of the forest for no apparent reason, so you get robots instead.  Also, yes, I could've made the Molerat that replaces the Radroaches leveled, but I just can't be bothered to care.  I've also considereed replacing them with a wild dog, but that has the same issue as the raiders - the game has over a dozen different dog models.

And before anyone says otherwise, NO this mod should NOT be tagged as "is not lore friendly."  If I had replaced all the bugs with naked copies of Magnolia, THEN it'd be not lore friendly.

Last, just to reiterate, I have not changed the levels that these creatures spawn at, only which creatures spawn.  This means that where you used to see a deathskull radscorpion at level 64, you'll now see a mythic deathclaw at level 64.  However, a normal deathclaw spawn point wouldn't give you a mythic deathclaw until level 91, so yes, this will certainly make the game a little harder.  That said, it's not extremely difficult to kill a mythic deathclaw at level 40, much less 64, so I have no intention to "fix" this.

Future plans: Might release an additional mod (just as an optional file here, probably) to replace Mirekurks with Yao Guais.  I am not sure if I even really want this, but if there's enough interest I'll probably give it a try.  Eventually.
