About this mod
Ever wondered *how* the Sole Survivor learns the Brotherhood of Steel Knight, Paladin, and Sentinel paint jobs for his T-60 Power Armor?
He learns them from Proctor Ingram's reference manuals, of course!
This mod adds reference manuals for each of the BoS paint jobs to the game.
- Permissions and credits
These have been combined into a single mod: Whisper's (Un)Locked Power Armor Paints
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This mod immersively adds reference manuals for each of the BoS paint jobs to the game, in Engineering aboard the Prydwen, on a table beside Bay 3. I have attempted to make the process as lore-friendly as possible.
The paint jobs are:
Standard (*unlocked and expanded*)
Officer (*unlocked and expanded*)
Initiate (*unlocked*)
Knight
Knight-Sergeant (*unlocked*)
Knight-Captain (*unlocked*)
Paladin
Sentinel
General (*added custom*)
Elder (*unlocked*)
You are free to just read-and-leave the reference manuals, or you can take them as souvenirs.
Reference Manuals:
1 set of basic day-to-day manuals which have been scattered and misplaced across the Prydwen
1 set of Ingram's personal manuals - the General's Insignia manual is in the cage with Teagan
1 set of Maxson's personal manuals - owned by him so you'll have to steal them if you want them
The text is slightly different between each of the three sets of manuals, yet they all give the same paint-jobs.
I'd always wondered exactly which paint jobs were available for the Brotherhood. I knew that Elder Maxson had his own version. Eventually I cracked open the CK and went looking. There were more than I thought.
So, no longer are you limited to following the Brotherhood of Steel questline to get access to their Power Armor paint jobs. You can read Proctor Ingram's reference manuals for each of them. (Your choice to leave or take them - the Sole Survivor gets the information either way.)
If you manage to sleaze your way into the Prydwen (*cough* Railroad *cough*) you can steal the books/information as well.
Notes:
If you are using LOOT Detector then the books will show up if you are within range.
If you find a mistake with this mod, let me know in the bugs section. It'll take me a while to notice and fix it - life is busy.
F.A.Q.
Q: Your mod broke my game!
A: Uninstall this mod and revert to an earlier save.
Q: Do I need the DLC?
A: No. All the assets are from the base Fallout 4 game.
Q: I already have Knight/Paladin/Sentinel paint jobs. Will this mess up the progress that I have already made?
A: No. You can read the books safely. They use the same mechanism that is used when progressing through the Brotherhood of Steel storyline - reading/not reading/reading multiple times won't hurt.
Q: Standard? Officer? Initiate? What are these paint jobs?
A: These are assets from the base game. I just unlocked them. (Admittedly, I had to give the Standard and Officer paint jobs the BoS Emblem on the torso - they were using raw unpainted T-60 armor. I figure that that content wasn't quite finished, so did some basic tweaks to bring them to life. Wear your Emblem with pride: Ad Victoriam!)
Q: Knight-Sergeant paint?
A: That's the paint used by Knight-Sergeant Gavil. If you see him in Power Armor, you'll know.
Q: Knight-Captain paint?
A: That's the paint used by Knight-Captain Cade and Larsen. Also a few others floating around Boston Airport.
Q: Some of the text when reading through the books has an odd gap between lines?
A: A basic flaw in FO4 - sometimes it seems to go like that. I couldn't figure how to fix it.
Q: That paper that the Sole Survivor is reading looks too nice!
A: The Brotherhood can manufacture T-60 Power Armor. The earliest (known) existing intact piece of paper is from the 11th century, made from hemp and linen rags. The Chinese were making paper around 200BCE. It certainly is no stretch that the Brotherhood can manufacture their own bleached paper, given their focus on collecting and preserving technology. Even Piper has an old printing press.
Q: Hang on. The Sentinel paint job is in the book as AX17-J-33H. The Elder paint job is in the book as AX17-J-33J. What happened to AX17-J-33I? Why the gap?
A: You caught me! Actually there is an extra difference between Sentinel and Elder paint jobs. The Sentinel has one pip in the Insignia, the Elder has three pips in the Insignia. There's a potential for two pips - I believe it's for a BoS General. Since the assets aren't in the game, I left a gap in the serialization.
Found the list of Brotherhood of Steel Ranks. Confirmed. Work completed on the General Insignia.
Q: Some of the new paint job names don't come up right with <favorite sorting mod>?
A: You'll have to make a patch for the Standard and Officer and General paint jobs.
Q: Okay, personalized blue or gold emboss? What gives?
A: I "borrowed" (for personal use) two images from the Fallout4 Wiki:
* the blue emboss version
* the gold emboss version
Since I "borrowed" them, I don't have the rights to post the personalized versions up on here for your use - I have put the images up as an example to inspire the more graphically-inclined for their own variations. You can grab them yourself and have some fun, it requires GIMP with the DDS plugin to make a replacement texture file. You will need to put the replacement texture into here: "<FO4 Data>/textures/whisperAllBoSPaintJobs/whisperAllBoSPaintJobsBook_d.dds"
In my personal game, Ingram's personal manuals are blue-embossed while Maxson's are gold-embossed.
