About this mod

Treat Index or Vive Cosmos controllers as Touch controllers in the game to provide a saner control scheme.

Update: This mod is obsolete. The only thing you need is to choose an appropriate controller binding which is set to emulate Touch controls: Check your current binding by opening it in the SteamVR binding editor and look under "Legacy actions". If it's not set to emulate Oculus Touch, set it to do that and save the profile. You do need to have your controllers turned on before you launch the game.

By default, Fallout 4 VR treats Index controllers as Vive wands. Unfortunately, the resulting control scheme is nearly unplayable and in particular makes menus hard to navigate. This mod tricks the game into believing that the Index controllers are Oculus touch controllers, which leads to a more natural control scheme that may still not be ideal, but is at least very playable.

Installation:

  • place the extracted openvr_api.dll in your Fallout 4 VR installation directory, replacing the one that ships with the game (you may wish to make a backup, just in case). This DLL tricks the game into believing you are using an Oculus VR setup even if you are not.
  • You still need to customize the SteamVR controller bindings for the game, because unfortunately the default legacy bindings do not map the A buttons correctly. After starting SteamVR, open the dashboard, go to the Settings tab, select Controller Settings. Select Fallout 4 VR from the list. You should be presented with a list of user-provided controller bindings which includes my custom bindings for this mod that you should download and activate. If you can't find my bindings, you can instead edit the default legacy bindings yourself. You need to change the button mappings for both controllers' A button to map to the actual "left/right A button" instead of Grip. While you're at it, you should also delete the "Use as button" bindings for both thumbsticks. Then save your edits.
When you now run the game, you should have the Oculus touch control scheme working.

Overview over the Touch control scheme

The Touch scheme does a few things differently than what you might be used to from the Vive wands, so here are a few hints:
  • Jump is Up on the right thumbstick, crouching is Down on the right thumbstick (if you have comfort crouching enabled)
  • Left B button opens the ingame menu, select with either thumbstick. Selecting an option is usually Trigger, while going back / closing the menu is "Grip" (squeeze the controller until you get a haptic feedback from the squeeze).
  • Left Trigger opens the Pipboy (if projected).
  • Click on the left thumbstick in the inventory opens the submenu to fav/drop items etc.
  • Click on the right thumbstick opens the radial wepaons menu
