Do you sorta like Bethesda's original concept of a cursed machine gun but wished the cooling jackets made sense? This mod turns the 'assault rifle' into a .308 vintage machine gun with custom meshes so you can have a water cooled M249, a Lewis Gun, or a blend of both.

Version 1.0
Release
Conceptually, the assault rifle was a frankenstein of many weapons, but the most obvious parts were the Lewis-inspired silhouette and the M249 style foregrip. However, Bethesda didn't seem to take the time to research the reference weapons in question, so we got a cursed gun with a lot of parts that don't make a whole lot of sense. There's a lot of hate directed (understandably) towards this design and its implementation and we now have many high quality assault rifle/LMG replacers, but so far none have tried to stick to the (very aesthetically Fallout) original concept of a Lewis Gun x M249 x Maxim/Vickers... until now.
The assault riflevintage machine gun is now an automatic-only heavy weapon chambered in .308, scaling off the Heavy Gunner perk. It starts out being water-cooled, without the Lewis fins of the original design. The final barrel is now a true Lewis barrel with a forced-air shroud and none of the water cooling bits, making the gun significantly lighter at the cost of a bit of recoil control. Additionally, I've increased the damage and range of the weapon to reflect the caliber change. I've also tweaked the Gun Nut requirements to progress more smoothly as the semi-automatic receivers have been removed.
The stocks are modeled after the Lewis gunner stock and the Lewis infantry stock from vanilla assets. jkruse05 has also generously provided me with the permissions to include his bipod, M249 skeleton stock, polymer stock, and muzzle brake from his previous mods (AARP and 5.56 Pack). This mod wouldn't be half as blursed without these, so big thanks to him! It is highly recommended to run this mod alongside dpillari's The Ballistic Seriesso that the foregrip matches the polymer stock! Also, this mod is completely compatible with the amazing Assault Rifle Reanimated mod!
A big thanks to the DegenerateDak discord server for being patient enough to deal with a boosted monkey who just learned how to nifbash (me). Another shoutout to DefaltTheFixer for introducing me the power of Outfit Studio. And of course, credit to Bethesda for the concept in the first place.
Disclaimer: The meshes are by no means perfect. While I've tried to make it as retexture friendly as possible, I have no idea how it will interact with CC paints as I do not own/use these paints, but there will likely be stretching or mirrored parts that look awful. I have no intention of fixing this myself. You have been warned.
