We made it to HOT MODS (⇀‸↼‶) Thanks guys!

Description

This is basically a conversion of my original Skyrim mod.
It adds 36 facial piercings equippable by female characters.
The important part is that these respond to CharGen morphs and facial expressions.

Great News!
lee3310 made a mod to reliably distribute HeadParts to NPCs. You can also use it with the piercings from this mod.

Another important point is the way these piercings are implemented.
The only way I could make the 3D meshes (NIF-files) respond to morphs (TRI-files) was to introduce them into the game as HeadParts.
To make them avaliable to players I also created a regular Armor for each piercing which is essentially a placeholder that applies the corresponding HeadPart with a Papyrus-Script.

This leads to a number of implications and limitations:

  • The placeholder Armor items do not occupy a Biped Object slot, so you can equip as many piercings as you want.
Yet, the game seems to handle the greater number of HeadParts surprisingly well.

  • As the piercings are applied as HeadParts they will be saved to LooksMenu presets and to exported NIF-Files of your characters.
So I recommend you make a backup preset of your character before equipping any piercings. This also means you can load a preset containing piercings on a character without the corresponding Armor placeholders. You can use this effect if you feel all those Armor placeholders are bloating your inventory. If the effect is unwanted however, you can simply pick up the corresponding placeholders, equip them and unequip them to remove the HeadParts.

Compatability and Requirements

Required

Recommended
  • For aligning the piercings and creating their morphs I used HiPoly Faces REDUX as a reference.
So I recommend using that mod. Head meshes and morphs from vanilla Fallout 4 or mods that replace them will work with this mod but there will propably be some clipping. If you want to optimize the piercings for any head / morph mod I also offer my support.

Installation

  • Install this mod via a mod manager or by extracting it's contents to your Fallout 4 data folder.
  • The only file conflicts you may encounter are the female meshes (BaseFemaleHead_faceBones.nif) for regular and HiPoly Faces.
The difference between the meshes and what that means for the piercings is illustrated in the image below. For all piercings to be displayed correctly the ears have to be more concave so this mod contains edited head meshes.
  • Enjoy.

Getting the Items

  • Craft them at the Chemistry Station under the "PIERCINGS" Category.
  • Use an item spawner mod.
  • Use the console, enter "help piercing" and add the items to your inventory via commands.

Developement

This was pretty much the same process as in the original mod for Skyrim.
However, there is an important difference between Fallout 4 and Skyrim.
While Skyrim only uses CharGen morphs for vanilla character creation, Fallout 4 makes extensive use of face bones for sculpting character heads.

Face bones are quite tricky for piercings working in OutfitStudio.
When copying bone weights form references, there is no option for solid objects that are not supposed to bend.
The only way I could prevent the piercings from getting distorted by this issue was to open them up in Blender again
where there is a tool for averaging out bone weights.
If you ever see distorted / spiky meshes in game when working on piercings it's propably this issue.

To Do

Here is some stuff I still want to do if I find the time and Todd finishes maintaining the Fallout4 Papyrus Reference...

  • Make different materials available for the piercings
  • Add patches for AWKCR and ECO
  • Add LooksMenu UI to configure piercings
