Final Fantasy III first made it to the US in the form of its Nintendo DS remake, which moved from 2D to 3D and replaced the nameless, personality-less Onion Knights of the original with four set characters with individual looks and (admittedly limited) personalities. The remake was then released for PlayStation Portable, mobile, and PC. More recently, a version of the original 2D Final Fantasy III made its way to the US in the form of the Final Fantasy III Pixel Remaster.

This is a project to visually put the characters from the DS remake - Luneth, Arc, Refia, and Ingus - into the Pixel Remaster as 2D sprites. M3CH4 N1NJ4 on the Moogles and Mods Discord put in a huge amount of effort creating 2400 individual sprites of Luneth and crew, and I modded them into the game (with a much less impressive amount of effort, lol). Now you can have Luneth and his squad in your Pixel Remaster!

This mod will give each of your nameless Onion Knights sprites corresponding with one of the characters from the 3D remake. The remake reverses the order and colors of the 2D Onion Knights, which has been preserved here.

  • Onion Knight 1 (red) -> Luneth (purple)
  • Onion Knight 2 (blue) -> Arc (green)
  • Onion Knight 3 (green) -> Refia (blue)
  • Onion Knight 4 (purple) -> Ingus (red)

Instead of every character sharing the same job sprite, each member of your party will now have his or her own individual job sprites (so, for example, Luneth's sprite for an individual job will look different from Arc's or Refia's version of the same job). This affects both in-battle sprites and map sprites. Every job has been edited.

M3CH4 N1NJ4 also created some great sprites for the one-off abilities like Kick, Throw, and Study that look vastly better than the original FFIIIPR! (The vanilla version, like its NES original, merely turns the victory battle sprite on its side for the Kick attack, while this mod has a dedicated Kick sprite which looks great!)

Unfortunately, while the 3D remake has individual mini and toad map sprites, this mod still has the collectively shared single set of mini and toad map sprites that Final Fantasy III PR uses for all four characters, guest party members, and many NPCs (though they have been edited by M3CH4 N1NJ4 to look better). In battle, each character has their proper individual toad and map sprites, but not out of battle. I couldn't figure out how to make the individual character versions of the mini and toad map sprites work, but they do exist, and perhaps I'll figure it out for a future version.

This is strictly a cosmetic mod; it does not add any of the gameplay changes or added content from the 3D remake into the PR. The characters' initial Onion Knight jobs use their Onion Knight sprites (which in the DS version was an ultimate job) rather than their Freelancer sprites (which in the DS version was their initial job).

Installation Directions
First you'll want to install BepinEx and Magicite; a great guide for installing both (as well as many other Final Fantasy III Pixel Remaster mods) can be found at https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2787489586. Once Magicite is installed, extract the DS Character Sprites directory into your Magicite mods directory, which is usually under FINAL FANTASY III PR/FINAL FANTASY III_Data/StreamingAssets/Magicite. (If you don't have a Magicite directory there, just create one!)

If you run into issues, it may be because using Magicite tends to result in long filepaths, which if you installed Steam in the default location, can lead to some filenames/paths running up against the limit (several folks have run into this with map sprites). I've already shortened the name, which should hopefully help keep that from becoming an issue, but if you still run into problems, try renaming the mod directory to something shorter (like "DS") and see if that helps! The other thing that may help if you run into issues is making sure you don't have Memoria importing files as well (if it tries to import the same file that Magicite is here, that will often make things go screwy). Finally, this doesn't play well with any other mods that edit the party members' battle and map sprites, so you'll want to make sure you don't have any other ones of those installed.

Thanks
Obviously the biggest thanks goes to M3CH4 N1NJ4 for creating all eleventy-billion job sprites!

Other thanks go to:
  • Spriters Resource for serving as a resource for so many job sprites;
  • The wiki that AerospaceCoot35 found the Dragoon sprites on;
  • Silvris for laying the framework for this with Magicite;
  • NeonOnionKnight for the bases for Sage and Geomancer sprites;
  • and gvdn for help with the Thief overworld sprites!

Also, if you're wondering, the font used in the screenshots is the FF 3/4 DS Font by Maxi and Enfyve. It can be found at the font modding guide here.
