This mod fixes the critical hit rate bug that is present in all versions of the first Final Fantasy, including the Pixel Remaster. While weapons had specific critical rates coded in to the system in the original Famicom release, due to a bug those numbers were not used, and instead the weapon's index number was used as its critical rate. Generally the index numbers of weapons increased for weapons received later in the game, which meant that weapons had ever-increasing critical hit rates.

This bug held true for the American NES release, the MSX2 release, and the WonderSwan Color release. Starting with the PSX release, weapons' index numbers were no longer used - a separate critical hit rate was properly programmed - but those numbers were set equal to the weapons' original index numbers, essentially turning the former bug into a feature.

If you've ever wanted to play the original Final Fantasy with the critical hit rate bug fixed, with critical rates as they were originally intended to be, then this mod is for you! It restores those originally intended NES critical hit rate values. In general, categories of weapons have similar critical hit rates - hammers and staves have critical rates of 1%, axes have a critical rate of 3-4%, most swords have a 5-10% range, and nunchaku have a 10% critical rate. Overall, you will receive far fewer critical hits than you do in vanilla FFI. This change does make two weapons in the vanilla game - the Vorpal Sword and Sasuke's Blade - considerably more powerful, as they have critical rates of 30%, far higher than any other weapons in the game. (They did not stand out as much in the original release, as while they received a small boost from the bug, so many other weapons had critical rates raised to match or exceed theirs that they no longer had the advantage.)

Thanks to Conundrum on the Moogles and Mods Discord for bringing the issue up and asking if there was a bugfix!
