Presentation:

Cheyck’s Nightmare is a hardmod for Final Fantasy X created with passion, patience, and love by two merry fellows: DV (author of various mods for Final Fantasy IX, including the hardmod Trance Seek, still in development) and Cheyck (myself), who initiated this project! You may notice some influences from Karifean’s Masters Challenge and Pbirdman’s PBMmod.

Forthe anecdote, I started working on this hardmod with limited resources (fireYtail’s editors, which are sadly no longer available) for Shothari’s let’s play, a French streamer. He wanted to play a hardmod of FFX in French, but since none existed, I decided to embark on this adventure!

project contributions:

  • DV handled about 60% of the work: he modified the AI of bosses and super bosses from Gagazet onward, made corrections to some earlier bosses, and altered or added certain boss attacks, abilities, and overdrives (with the help of Karifean’s FFXDataParser).

  • I contributed around 40%: I modified all monster stats, as well as the stats and AI of bosses up to Gagazet (with DVlad’s assistance to fix certain details and bugs).

Note:
This hardmod is currentlyonly available in French! However, with UnX, you can select English
or Japanese voiceovers.

Installation Instructions:

Step1: Installing UniX

  • Download and install UniX from the following link: Steam.
  • Refer to the detailed instructions on the dedicated Steam page to explore additional features provided by UniX.
Step2: Installing the Mod

Two methods are available for installing the mod. Choose the one that best suits your needs.

Method A: Extracting files from the .rar (external files loader included)
  • Just extract all files to the following directory: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\FINAL FANTASY FFX&FFX-2 HD Remaster
  • The mod is now ready to use.

Method B: Using "VBFBrowser" (Recommended to Avoid Certain Bugs)

  • Download the "VBF Browser" software from:
  • Important: Before proceeding, create a backup of the FFX_Data.vbf file located in: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\FINAL FANTASY FFX&FFX-2 HD Remaster\data. Name the backup as you wish (e.g., FFX_Data.vbf_backup).
  • Launch VBF Browser and open the FFX_Data.vbf file using the "Open" option.
  • In the directory tree, navigate to:ffx_ps2\ffx\master\jppc\battle.
  • Select the "mon" folder (highlight it without opening it).
  • Click "Inject" (bottom left), then confirm replacing the entire folder by selecting "Yes".
  • Choose the "mon" folder from the downloaded archive, located in: ffx_ps2\ffx\master\jppc\battle.
  • Confirm by clicking "Ok". The software will apply the patch.
  • Close VBF Browser. The mod is now installed and ready to use.

Known Issues:

During the final battle against the aeons, it is strongly recommended to avoid using the soft reset function of the UniX mod. Due to modifications to the aeons’ artificial intelligence and the removal of their introductory cutscenes to save space, the UniX texture cache may fail to clear properly between soft resets. This can randomly cause texture bugs on the aeons, potentially crashing the game. In such cases, a full game restart will be necessary.
