About this mod
Makes horde mode playable offline, brings unreleased Locust enemies into horde mode, reenables the cut Horde map editor feature and more.
- Permissions and credits
- Changelogs
- Offline Horde mode
- Offline Horde Frenzy
- Somewhat useable, but janky, Horde map editor feature (we'll go over this later)
This mod replaces the Arcade Blitz and Arcade Deathmatch modes with Horde and Horde Frenzy. Just make a LAN Versus lobby to play. Must be played Offline/LAN!
Arcade Blitz -> Horde
Arcade Deathmatch -> Horde Frenzy with Locust enemies
Extra game modes available to download in optional files.
Horde mode has 3 different enemy factions to fight
- Swarm
- Deebees
- Locust
The "Core" enemies that always spawn have been removed, Swarm and Locust no longer spawn alongside Deebees and fight with them. Lambent enemies aren't in for now.
Horde Frenzy mode has just 1 faction, the Locust, but unreleased/cut enemies have been added. Most of these are very incomplete and buggy, so they've been excluded from the regular Horde mode.
- Ticker (uses wild ticker model, no sound)
- Wretch (no sound)
- Butcher (can't attack, will drop cleaver on death)
- Mauler (can't attack, drops Boomshield on death)
- Boomer
- Grinder (doesn't hold his Mulcher properly)
- Flame Boomer (uses a special scorcher that is very bugged and deals no damage)
Waves 4,8 and 12 will use RAAM, Skorge and Myrrah from the Nexus Siege. All of the drone variants from Nexus Siege will spawn in this mode.
Other changes
- The active reload mechanic has been reverted to how it was pre Gears 5. You cannot reload when your gun is fully loaded and the active reload buff only applies to the bullets that you put in on that reload. If you miss an active reload, you miss an active reload.
- Bots have been changed.
- In Horde mode, Vermelo and Casan have been promoted to Onyx Guards and have the Gunner Reflective Shell ability. They will automatically use this if their health drops too low. They also spawn with Mulchers.
- In Horde Frenzy, most of the bots have been replaced with A. Carmine., with one of them (sometimes more... whoops...) spawning in as Dom. Play as Marcus for maximum brotherly immerson.
- All of the bots have grenades and can throw them.
- Your starting loadout has been changed to include the Hammer of Dawn from MP. Finally you can drop the hammer down on some Locust scum in Gears 5! It cannot be recharged at a weapons locker, but ammo boxes work just fine.
No way to pick your class unfortunately, as we are using the MP lobby to start a horde match, since TC never added an official way to play horde offline. You'll have no cards and you'll be playing the Mechanic.
Horde Map Editor
The Boot Camp option on the Main Menu now links to the unfinished and cancelled map editor feature which was used for Escape until it was canned and removed from the game. It can be confusing to use, so I'll try to explain.
When you first boot into it, you're going to get a blank map. Open the pause menu and select "Editor". This will boot you into the editor. You'll be able to stick pieces together and make whatever you want and play a Horde Frenzy match on it. Sounds fun right? Well there are some things you need to know.
- There is a button you can press to center the view back to the center of the map, this is important because this is where the game will try and spawn your character at the start of the match, YOU NEED TO PLACE SOMETHING HERE SO YOU DON'T FALL THROUGH THE FLOOR, and most pieces you place there will still have your character spawning out of bounds. I found the "Barracks T-Junction" to work well. Some of the larger pieces work too.
- Once you've had your fun and you exit back out to the Editor, you'll notice your map is gone! Don't worry, your map is not lost. Exit to Main menu and go back to Boot Camp. You'll get a black screen, just Pause and go to Editor. Your map should be there and you can continue working on it or play again.
- You can make the map as big or small as you want, enemies will spawn automatically for Horde
- Audio in Wave 1 is always bugged, weapons don't make sound. Make it past Wave 1 and the audio will be fixed for Wave 2 onwards.
- AI Soldier Bots won't spawn in this mode
- Fabricator does not spawn in this mode, but you can place Weapon Lockers in the editor mode, as well as spawn any weapons and ammo boxes on the map. These don't seem to auto respawn in between waves. Weapon Lockers can't be rebuilt once destroyed since you have no power.
- Disregard any error messages the editor throws at you like "Not enough fabricator spawn points" or "Not enough spawns". These don't matter and do not prevent you from launching into Horde.
- After you're done with your map, open the pause menu while in the editor and click Launch Horde
Keep in mind that the things included in this mod for the most part are unfinished/cut content from TC, so just try and temper your expectations when working with the map editor and fighting the cut Locust enemies.
Optional Files
XL Mode cranks enemy spawns up to 11. Lots more enemies per wave and a lot more are allowed to spawn at a time. Enemies spawn everywhere. Friendly bots come with ultimates that spawn friendly DR1s and Shepherds to give you some extra help. Guaranteed to tank your fps. Some AI can become unresponsive due to how many AI there are.
Terminator Event is 10 waves of Terminator enemies with a Kestrel boss at Wave 10. They are reskinned DR1s with some different weapons. Increased enemy spawns like XL Mode, but not too much that it causes issues.

Find your Gears 5 directory
probably something like ->
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Gears5\ or D:\Games\steamapps\common\Gears5\
Make a backup of your GearGame.b2index
this can be found in Gears5\GearGame\Content\B2
Drop the GearGame folder in your Gears 5 directory
Uninstall
Restore the GearGame.b2index file you backed up
Delete the GearGame.b2index that came with the mod
Delete the defaultGame.ini file and the json folder located here: Gears5\GearGame\Config
I must give credit to the one other Gears 5 mod on the Nexus. That is where I got the files from in the first place to even make this mod and to even learn how to mod Gears 5. I'd link it, but it is literally the only other Gears 5 mod on the Nexus, I'm sure you'll find it. :)
