Background:
As part of Sony/SMS's efforts to make the game as accessible to as wide an audience as possible, they decide to record thousands of voice lines where the NPC companions effectively narrate the game so that (theoretically) the player will always know what to do and are less likely to get stuck. This can range from some useful hints, such as Mimir warning you of enemies attacking from behind the camera, to the most useless observations on the planet, such as Mimir telling you you're on fire/bifrosted or the companions constantly reminding you to shield strike. Worse still, companions will often give away the answers to puzzles before you've had the opportunity to figure them and patronisingly congratulate you upon completion.
SMS did add an option in the recent patch which allegedly reduces the chances of some of this dialogue occurring, however from my observations this has done little to resolve the problem. Unfortunately a lot of this handholdy dialogue comes across as incredibly annoying, so I've created this mod in an effort to completely remove most of this dialogue bloat and let players think for themselves. Please bare in mind this mod is a work in progress, it takes a long time to identify these voice lines so more dialogue will be filtered out in future patches. So far I've removed 3300+ voice lines from the game but there's still more to come. For this current version I've mainly focused on the combat dialogue as they are very prominent in the game and easy to identify. Unfortunately the puzzle related dialogue is often intertwined with story/cutscene dialogue so identifying them is a lot more challenging and will be my focus in future versions if this mod proves popular enough.
Dialogue removed:
This isn't all of them but here are some of my favourite (or I guess least favourite) examples dialogue that I have removed:
Combat Only:
- (General) Removed shield strike suggestions from companions during combat e.g. “Use a shield strike, brother!”
- (General) Removed companion voice lines whichalert the player to conditions such as being set on fire, frozen or bifrosted e.g. “You’re on fire, Kratos. It will pass”, “You got Bifrösted! Is "Bifrösted" a word?” or “Careful brother, you're covered in Bifröst!”
- (General) Removed suggestions/chastising from companions when failing to block e.g. “What good’s a shield if you’re not gonna use it?”, “Ain't your shield working!?”, “Father, why aren't you blocking?” or “I've seen you parry worse.”
- (General) Removed companion callouts for specific enemy actions e.g. “Brother! That Grim's found a perch on high!”, “Light Orb, incoming!” or “The Phantom's core is the source of its power. Hit it, already!”
- (General) Removed companion reminders to use rage meter e.g. “Bring out the wolf!”
- (General) Removed companion reminders to use companion bows e.g. “I have a bow, Kratos. And I know how to use it.” or “I can fire more arrows next time.”
- Removed Angrboda’s suggestions during the Gryla boss fight e.g. “Over there! Gotta destroy that cauldron. Can you swing across?”
- Removed Freya’s (really annoying) suggestions and chastising during the Níðhögg boss fight e.g. “Why are you all the way back there? Go after it!”
- Removed some of Atreus’ tutorial self-commentary during his sections e.g. “Wait... you’re made of magic, so I gotta beat you with magic…”
- Removed Atreus’ suggestions during the Garm boss fight e.g. “What are you waiting for? It won’t hold him for long.”
- Removed Mimir’s Spear suggestions during the Heimdall boss fight e.g. “Throw the spear, brother!”
- Removed Freya’s Sonic/Hex & shield strike suggestions during the Gna boss fight e.g. “Kratos, my Sigils might counter hers!”
- (General) Removed generalised compliments and suggestions for solving puzzles e.g. “Oh, nice—that's it.”, “No. That's not it.” or “Don't think that's right.”
- (General) Removed generalised observations companions will make pointing out things the player may have missed e.g. “Kratos, over here.” or “This is interesting. Look…”
- (General) Removed dialogue which relates to finding a dead end or staying in a single area too long e.g. “I don’t think we can go this way…” or “Looks like a dead end.”
- (General) Removed dialogue pointing out the player using the wrong tools to solve puzzles e.g. “Looks like it’s not vulnerable to Sigil Arrows.” or “What if you tried using some of your other gear?”
- (General) Removed dialogue pointing out when a player takes too long e.g. “We may have messed up the timing there.” or “Just need to do it a little quicker, I think.”
- Removed Atreus’ hints relating to collapsing a pillar correctly during the Midgard prologue e.g. “Did something give, over on the right?”
- Removed Atreus and Mimir hints regarding the various geyser puzzles in Svartalfheim e.g. “What about freezing the geyser under the wheel? Maybe?”
- Removed Atreus and Mimir hints regarding one of the Nornir chests in Svartalfheim e.g. “There’s a brazier to the left of the chest. Maybe you can light it?”
- Removed Atreus, Tyr and Mimir hints regarding the Twlight Stone and Light Door Puzzles in Alfheim e.g. “The Light Door blocking the chest is gone...Now we just need to find a way over there.”
- Removed Freya’s hints for navigating the first trip to Vanaheim e.g. “I think we’ll need to adjust our strategy since there's more than one. Let’s try using a Sigil.”
- Removed Atreus’ self-commentary on where to go and how to play the game when he first arrives at Asgard e.g. “Hm. Father would just burn this away with his blades... but what can I do?
- Removed Mimir and Freya’s hints to redirect the player to searching the Norns in Midgard e.g. “Let’s find your wolves—get back to tracking the Norns.”
- Removed various Freya and Mimir hints on how to solve puzzles in the Svartalfheim storage area in the Draupnir chapter e.g. “I think my Sigil Arrows can help.” or “I’ll wager we can redirect the water to get that wheel turning.”
- Removed various Atreus hints in solving gate puzzles in the Helheim Garm chapter e.g. “Hmm... Maybe we can use my sigils to carry the frost to the gear?”
- Removed various companion hints in solving puzzles in favours such as rescuing the Hafgufas and destroying the Oil Rigs e.g. “Gotta get past that thick Hive somehow...” or “We’ve got to reach the ledge on the other side. I wonder if that crank would help us move the gantry.”
Installation:
To install simply download the files and drop them into your God Of War Ragnarok directory.
