When Studio Iggymob ported Gungrave G.O.R.E to the Nintendo Switch, they made significant changes to the gameplay balance and feel. In their words, they wanted to respond to user feedback to make the game faster and more casual friendly.
What this entailed was the addition of two gameplay systems that MASSIVELY altered the feel of the game.
First is the "Full-Break System," which makes it so Grave shoots incrementally faster as his beat count increases, reaching a ridiculously high shooting speed at 500 beat.
The second change was the addition of "Run Shot," which basically just means that Grave's speed when shooting is always at a maximum sprint, allowing grave to freely run around the map while shooting. This is contrary to the gameplay style seen in the first Gungrave game and the Console/PC version of G.O.R.E, where Grave had a naturally lumbering, slow movement to make up for his strong attack power.
Now, of course, I can't fault Iggymob for making these changes. After all, they were developing this port with a casual audience deliberately in mind, so they did not want to alienate new players with these gameplay styles that already received much criticism when the game released.
That said, it is also not hard to see why certain fans of the original game felt disappointed by the new gameplay of the Switch version. The "run shoot" gameplay style erased much of the unique gameplay identity of Grave as an action hero. While previously he was iconic for being a slow, deadly arsenal of destruction, now he is still an arsenal of destruction, but that is no longer compensated by his slow speed.
This may not sound bad on the surface, but the issue is that this change does not account for the way the original was balanced. Mechanics like the chain grapple, shoot dodge, demolition shots, and even the level design itself were all based on the idea that Grave was a slow moving tank. Without this consideration, the game becomes incredibly easy and boring to play, since you no longer have to consider many of these mechanics while playing. This, combined with the Full Break system that only serves to power up Grave even further, makes the game a lot less interesting to play as a fan of the original arcade-y gameplay style.
Rather than rolling back the update version on Steam, I made this mod to restore, in its entirety, the gameplay mechanics of the original to give players the option of which version of Gungrave G.O.R.E they want to play.
- Restores Grave and Bunji's original walking speed and animations
Note: This change does not affect other characters, including Rocketbilly Redcadillac, Brandon Heat and Harry MacDowell, all of which retain their walking and running speeds. - (OPTIONAL) Disables the Full Break system for Grave, Brandon and Bunji.
Note: I left this mechanic intact for the DLC characters Rocketbilly Redcadillac and Harry MacDowell, as I feel like these characters were designed with this system in mind and would otherwise lose their gameplay identity in their removal.
- Install DeathClawDC's "Game Mod Loader" mod.
Instructions should be included in its respective mod page. - Once installed, navigate to (or remain in) the game's root folder and go to "Gungrave G.O.R.E\GunGraveGore\Content\Paks"
- Unzip the "~mods" folder from the "Old Movement" file.
- (OPTIONAL) If you downloaded the "Remove Full Break" module, then unzip the file contained inside to the "~mods" folder as well. You may use this module and the "Old Movement" module interchangeably, meaning you can delete one or the other without breaking the game.
- These gameplay changes should reflect next time you play the game. You can still freely play as Rocketbilly Redcadillac, Harry MacDowell and Street Grave without any issues.
