Dialogue Test and Possibilities

About this image

I wanted to test what dialogue could do;  I added some fairly straight foward question chains to Bayan that let you inquire about the Shek's lore by paraphrasing in-game book, and comment lore.

I then had a sudden idea, after realising that dialogue trees can be given additional complexities, such as hiding certain dialogue until certain factors are met; e.g, Bayan has a different set of dialogues for when you are an ally with the Shek, or certain conditions THAT WON'T BE NAMED are met. So, I decided the obvious choice was to test if I could implement a sort of 'opinion' metre - that changes dialogue, or provides certain abilities when relations reach a certain point. Using world stages, and dialogue restrictions, it turned out this was not only possible, but highly customisable.

As a concept it opens up a whole host of possibilites for unique recruits, and for adding to factions; in essence too, you can use it to create 'quests' by putting certain requirements into dialogue loops. There might be other ways to achieve this, but this is just personally the one that I have found. I thought some people might be interested in it.

The test I did followed several stages:

A new dialogue loop that increases player reputation with the new 'Bayan' faction

Once this faction had rep at 'Allied' the original Bayan dialogue would be hidden, and instead a new dialogue tree would be given

This  dialogue tree then has a fairly simple loop that gives the player Ancient Ration Packs as a test to see if it works

As the picture shows, this did in fact work.

Given that dialogue trees can be duplicated (without rewriting them all) to achieve the same set of comments you would otherwise have, not only can you have his original dialogue loops, but additional comments that would not otherwise appear.

It could also potentially open up a dialogue that allows him to trade a 'secret stash'.

I haven't tested completely what it's capable of doing as I wanted to just test if a faction based system could work, and of course, as a proof of concept, it does.
