This update, 1.1, will be the final major update to More Sensible Weapons and Armor, barring bugfixes, prior to the release of KCD2. (I expect there'll be a More Sensible for KCD2 as well, so keep an eye out for that).
I've completed the light armor rework that I began back in v0.8. This version of light armor is much more conservative compared to the light armor fix mod on Nexus. Before I walk through the changes, here's an explainer:
What is light armor?
The light armor perk improves your ability to dodge when not wearing plate. Unfortunately there are several issues with how it is implemented, and no solution is perfect. In the base game, whether an armor is "Light" or not (for the purposes of the Light Armor perk) is tied to its armor type and not to its weight or category. There are five armor types:
- Cloth
- Light Leather
- Heavy Leather
- Chainmail
- Plate
And the type of armor determines its "Light Armor" classification as well as its sound. So a gauntlet with "type = plate" will automatically be not light armor, and will play the plate armor sound. This creates a number of inconsistencies where, for example, a heavy hauberk (~20 weight) is not heavy armor because it is chainmail, and a 4-weight cuirass is heavy, because it is plate. This is further inconsistent because it doesn't consider coverage - someone who wears just plate couters would not by any stretch of the imagination be "heavily armored" and would likely still dodge just as well as someone with no armor. However, because couters are plate - they lose the light armor perk.
To achieve the effect I wanted, I changed several armor types which also unavoidably changes their sound effects. The original light armor fix achieves this by setting all armor types to cloth, which is also not ideal because it makes all armor sound exactly the same. I have done my best to strike a balance here, still using the original game's richness of sound & the developers' hard work, while also making armor More Sensible.
Approach that I followed:
Items which are either "plate" or obviously "heavy" (e.g. body plate, chain hauberks, plate gauntlets) are no longer classified as light armor. Items which are visibly "light" (e.g. plate couters, common bascinet) and were previously classified as plate, are now classified as either chain or heavy leather (i.e., light armor). There are some exceptions, for example the default Cuirass (which has only half the coverage of other cuirasses) is now also Light Armor.
Unfortunately there is no way to identify these in game (even in vanilla) so players will have to resort to trying everything and seeing if they lose the light armor bonus (it's an icon that shows up on bottom centre of your screen iirc). I could edit item descriptions to say which are light armor, but this is a tonne of work for very marginal gain, and also fucks with the localisation, so I've avoided it.
Full list of Light Armor Items:
Note this is not every item that counts as light armor in the game, but the items that I have changed in this patch.
Helms:
Simple helmets (bascinets without chain/faceplate and kettles without brims) are light armor.
- Skullcaps (both)
- Common Bascinet
- Some kettle hats (with smaller brims). This is a bit handwavey but larger brims would affect balance and/or catch blows, which would make it harder to dodge. Since light armor perk is about dodging, kettles with brims remain heavy armor.
Body Plate:
- Short Light Brigandine
- Lightweight Dark Brigandine
- Sasau Bailiff's Brigandine
- Vitus' Cuirass. (This is obviously plate, but in the game it is noted for how light and form-fitting it is, it and implied that Vitus is truly a master armorer. So I'll give it a handwave and it counts for light armor once you get it.)
- Cuirass (the plain one, it's just called "Cuirass")
Body Chain:
All chain hauberks now count as heavy armor, except for:
- Hungarian Hauberk (both)
- Short Common Hauberk (both)
- Cuman Hauberk
- Chainmail
Arm:
- Riveted Vambraces
- Brigandine Dyed Pauldrons (Red and Black)
- Lamellar Pauldrons
- Polish Plate Pauldrons
- Meissen Plate Pauldrons
Gloves:
- Riveted gloves.
Legs:
- Light Brigandine Chausses
- Short Brigandine Chausses
Enjoy, and thanks for playing!
