Some said the end draweth nigh, when the capital of the Eastern Roman Empire is blockaded by Sultan Bayezid I. Yet others trusted that the Pope shall not wait such a gem to fall into the hands of the Muslims. Bayezid tried to starve the city into submission by blockading it both by land and, less effectively, by sea. Crusade of Nicopolis was launched to help the city, but it was disasterously defeated. Finally, by God's grace, Constantinople was relieved when Turks had to lift the siege in 1402.
