About this mod

Alters physics parameters for the magnum opus to make it more hoonable. To put it another way, this takes the training wheels most of the way off the handling.

Smoke the tires.  Yank the handbrake and skid.  Stomp the throttle and do donuts.  Get the car to rotate even with heaps of weight on it.  Drive like you're as mad as the wasteland.

The handbrake in this game was way underpowered to the point of not really doing its job.  It now locks the rear wheels instantly, allowing you to kick the tail out on command.  The base chassis was unreasonably heavy - the bare frame of the opus was set to weigh significantly more than a complete and fully dressed 74 falcon xb.  I reduced the weight, making the car more responsive.  The gear ratios were absolute nonsense.  They still are because of factors i haven't tracked down yet requiring them to be, but now the final drive is aggressive enough to do a reasonable burnout by just flooring it from a stop, provided you're not too weighed down.  the opus also has variables with "supertire" in the name that artificially boosted grip, I've made those a lot less strong.  This handling is a bit more realistic and lets you pull some more advanced maneuvers, but it's also more happy to let you drive beyond your limits and crash.  If you've ever driven muscle cars on dirt, you know its barely controllable and that's what makes it so fun.

There's more I want to do in a more comprehensive handling overhaul, but I'm still learning my way around the variables and scripting so this is kind of a first step.

Update: Version 2 implements a lot of the changes I wanted to make for the more comprehensive mod, as well as refining what was in version 1.  Its different enough that I considered doing a separate release for it, but decided against that for two reasons:  first, I'm still beating my head against the wall trying to remove the arbitrary speed limiter on the opus and I don't consider it the finished overhaul until then.  It's faster than vanilla now, but not as fast as my Interceptor mod, which is the speed I'm trying to reach.  And second: I couldn't do enough mental gymnastics to make that not look like I was download farming even though that's not the intent.

Version 2 overview:
Improved torque, quicker steering response, more slippery than vanilla but a bit grippier than version 1.  Back-end numbers changed to make more sense to a car guy (stuff you never see in game like the rpm range of the motor).  Suspension tweaked for a slightly raked hot rod stance, and to make adding weight have more effect on ride height.  includes a rebalance of the engine upgrades - there's now a larger performance gap between the top v6 and the bottom v8, the starter engine is appropriately junk, and the final upgrade is the torque monster it should be.

known bug: sometimes changing from reverse to forward gears will bog and barely accelerate at first and I haven't figured out why.  If that happens, you can use the handbrake like a clutch kick to get the revs up.  Fixed in 2.0.1
