Page up and page down allow for switching between 'combat' mode with rifles raised and exploration mode. It also causes a quick save. I haven't been able to get it working without the quicksave/load also in so that'll have to stay for now.
It just really annoyed me back in 2012, and again in 2021.

Yes, there can be issues with this method, but consider it a quick dirty fix for now.
Squadmates have their weapons holstered and will not respond to squad commands, they still follow you but will not jump down things or climb over/up things.
