About this video

Over the last 21 years, the Morrowind Modding Community has overcome nearly every obstacle and implemented nearly every feature of more modern games, from distant land, to shaders, to combat overhauls. But one final frontier remains, one aspect that irrevocably dates Morrowind, even with all of the community's numerous graphical improvements. And that's the game's animations.

Today's Mod of the Day, while not a cure-all for Morrowind's animating woes, is still a major step in the right direction, for today we're showcasing Animation Blending by Greatness7. Based upon the work of Max Yari for OpenMW, Animation Blending adds new transitional animations to character movements, covering all player, NPC, and creature animations.

In the vanilla game, there weren't really any animation transitions at all, creatures and characters would simply blink between animation states. Now, with animation blending, instead of suddenly going from an upright walking position to a crouched sneak, you'll see your character naturally bend down, with a clear transition between the two positions. Switching weapons no longer teleports your arms into the correct position, now you'll see your hands and arms move to match whatever weapon you're gripping.

And this covers a hundred other different animation states for NPCs, creatures, and everything else you can imagine, working seamlessly, a minor, but transformative element to modernize Morrowind's animations.

There's still a long way to go before Morrowind's animations are modernized, but this first release by the Morrowind Animation Overhaul Project is a big first step, and can only bode well for more improved animations in the future!
