It is indeed a robotic arm! In my imagined continuity, it was something Pike picked up from the Big Empty after a particularly disastrous run.
As for his buttons, they're intended to add a little levity to his otherwise grim appearance. Glad to see they're working, although I imagine he'd frown if he heard you call them "adorable" XD
That means a lot, esp. coming from a talented person such as yourself!
Behind the scenes trivia: The rigging on his buttons is not very badass at the moment; I'm still struggling to get it right. It's workable, but in some poses, not so much.
