About this image

Bernd is a third generation descendant of a German-born physicist who emigrated from Europe to America in 2075. At the time of the Great War, Bernd's great-great grandfather was working in some secretive capacity for the U.S. government at an installation somewhere in the Nevada desert, the details of which are lost to antiquity. Bernd was raised in the ruins of this remote facility with a strong emphasis on learning and with a great appreciation of his family's storied German heritage. As a result, Bernd is quite learned in the sciences, and he speaks in an idiosyncratic mix of English and Germanic phrases.

After some tragedy, the details of which Bernd has never shared, he set out wandering the wastes. Over the long years, the harshness of the Mojave Wasteland has imprinted itself upon his body much like the toxic climate has done. As elements of his Ghoul physiology have suffered failures over time, Bernd has replaced them with hacked-together augmentations that are in many ways an improvement.

So- I'm working on a companion mod.

Assuming I can nail down the permissions I need, I plan to share Bernd here on the Nexus sometime hopefully shortly after the start of the new year. I plan to start a WIP thread on the forums soon-ish, wherein I will share whatever details I can and (of course) solicit as much volunteer help as possible.

In terms of progress, Bernd currently has the basics, such as a working companion wheel, all of his requisite gear, perk, and so on. I intend to add a short quest to gain him as a companion and full voice acting (likely provided by myself), but the ETA on that is hazy at best right now.

Additionally, I will add that Weijiesen's EVE (full DLC version) will be a mandatory requirement for Bernd. Though it may initially seem odd that a companion mod should require something as expansive and seemingly unrelated as that mod may be, let me assure you that Bernd and his gear is fully-tailored toward his crit-throwin' use of energy weapons, and as Nexus users know, EVE is the way to use them. You should already have it installed anyway.

Thanks a lot, although in fairness, I defer a lot of credit to the fact that I'm working with some very awesome assets, courtesy of the Nexus and the many amazing modders who release their stuff here.

Right now, I'm revising Bernd's outfit in Blender, making some major changes & a few tiny OCD tweaks at the same time. Then I'm going to do a little texture tweaking and hopefully the results will be more pleasing to the eye.

After that, it's back over to GECK, to further tweak his companion weapon stats 'til I'm happy with them, then create his death item (for when he's not marked 'essential' by the user).

Anyway, still plugging away toward an alpha state, at which point I'll feel comfortable soliciting any available assistance in taking him to the next level, so to speak. The advanced companion stuff that is simultaneously exactly what I'd like to do with him and just slightly outside my range of immediate understanding. Yay!

I guess I'm probably pulling influences from all over the place, honestly although I don't know that Deathshead's one of them. A little Red Skull, maybe?

Whatever the case, I initially pictured him as an independent, evil NPC, but with no larger mod to attach him to, I'm instead settling for making him a companion character.

If anyone's got any suggestions for where to go with this, I'm definitely listening...
