About this mod
Has it ever troubled you that for the supposed Main villains of the game Legion bases are about as tough as an origami cockroach with brittle bone disease? Well fear no more. Shadow of the Behemoth unleashes droves of Beasties, Gigantic Geckos and blood thirsty mercenaries crawling all over every Legion camp. Happy Hunting.

Since many modders have done an excellent job at beefing up the Legion’s strength and presence I wanted to address the underwhelming nature of their vanilla bases. It’s hard for the story’s main villain to remain credible threat when you can wipe all their bases (even the Fort!) off the map in about half an hour once you hit level 10. Fighting the Legion should be an ordeal, make you feel like your battling an unstoppable force, ratcheting up the sense threat and tension. Shadow of the Behemoth aims to bring back the tell tale ‘Oh crap, I just **** myself’ feeling we all got whenever the Master’s Army or Enclave lurched into view in the halcyon days of Fallout 1, 2 and 3. You’ll battle colossal monsters from Cottonwood Cove to Nelson and match wits with the Legion’s elite core.
*****Latest Version Changes*****
-The Fort, Nelson and Cottonwood Cove now each contain a Legion Beast Keeper. If you manage to off each camp's keeper the Behemoths will go berserk and attack anything in sight, Legion or otherwise.
-Replaced the Behemoths at The Legion Raid Camp and Techatticup mine with Giant Yao Guai.
-The creatures are now flagged as abominations, making them vulnerable to flare guns.
-A crate on the southern slope out of Camp Forlorn Hope containing a flare gun, ammunition and advice from Chief Hanlon on how to counter the Behemoths.
What you can expect:
-At least one major monster encounter in every vanilla Legion location.
-Smaller, weaker Behemoths at the Raid Camp and Techatticup mine, averagebeasties at Nelson and Cottonwood Cove and at least one unholy monstrosity at The Fort.
-More Legion bases throughout the South East (be warned, they now occupy many new locations like the Searchlight Gold mines and Wolfhorn Ranch).
-Additional Legion alien such as the Bushwhacker Mercenaries who can bebribed into turning on their masters.
-A much tougher, heavily fortified Nelson.
-Giant Geckos, Yao Guai and Reavers all at the Legion's command.
Behemoths- Caesar was having a perfectly happy day in his makeshift bath house till a big bald ugly monster ate up half of Denver. While the Legion lost a full 10’000 men trying to subdue the beastie they soon discovered the captured creature had great potential as a living weapon. It took years of brutalising and the unfortunate beast but one decade and 17 squashed cohorts later Eddiekins had his dream weapon- a hulking unstoppable slave free of even the pretence of free will. In years since his defeat at Hoover Dam Caesar has restlessly searched for more of these creatures to add to his army, with raiding parties scouring the plains for more strays as well as the occasional import from a place called Evergreen Mills.
Cataphracts- While Caesar despises full fat power armour he maintains a small core of troopers decked out in Salvaged gear to deal with heavier threats such as Brotherhood Chapters, Enclave remnants and holdouts from the Master’s army. As their energy weapons make them the only force in the Legion capable of reliably controlling the Behemoths Caesar often feared they might use their power to gains influence over the common Legionnaires and overthrow him. Therefore he issued a decree that they be taught to speak no other language but Greek from birth, and only himself and a handful of his lieutenants are even capable of understanding them. As a result they are strange and alien even to the other Legionnaires who regard them more as automatons than true comrades in arms. Additionally, using the weapons or armour of a Cataphract is a capital offence for all other Legion soliders.
Bushwhackers- These chaps are salty soldiers of fortune drawn from the Great Plains and swamps of the South East. In battle they’re fierce warriors, far more skilled and well equipped than the vast majority of NCR troopers and much of the Legion. However, they’re poor soldiers with little discipline and scant motivation beyond profit. When the tide turns against them they’re preferred tactic is the oldest in military history: run away like sissies. Moreover, if you seek out their leaders in Nelson and Cottonwood Cove they might just be convinced to turn on their benefactors…
Blackbirders- Pirates from the Gulf of Mexico. Further east Caesar has forged a profitable enterprise with these latter year sea dogs. Their rag tag fleet has allowed the Legion to expand its influence and Slave Trade from South America to the Capital Wasteland. While their armour is weak they compensate with powerful heavy weapons plundered from the Battleship Jefferson Davies. Caesar has marched them inland to use their naval prowess on Lake Mead and to sow terror all the way down the Colorado.

Be warned. Legion outposts will be much tougher now, and if you’re planning a one man onslaught on the Fort at Level 15 forget unless you want to be a very shallow red puddle. I understand that there are aspects of this Mod that mightbe debatable within the lore of the game. Therefore I have taken it upon myself to w̶e̶a̶k̶l̶y̶ ̶r̶a̶t̶i̶o̶n̶a̶l̶i̶s̶e̶ ̶m̶y̶ ̶w̶a̶n̶t̶o̶n̶ ̶v̶i̶o̶l̶a̶t̶i̶o̶n̶ ̶of c̶a̶n̶o̶n̶ explain how these modifications are acceptable within the lore of the game.
Behemoths- Some debate has been raised to whether or not Behemoths should feature outside the Capital Wasteland. We should remember that the Behemoths are the oldest Mutants from Vault 87, ones that have had time to grow to their massive size, leaving centuries for a few to wander out
west. Also we know of three completely separate strains of Super Mutant that developed independably of each other on opposite sides of the continent. Given that we have little knowledge of the Fallout universe outside of California, the Mojave, DC and Boston it’s perfectly possible that the Behemoths could have been produced by another Vault experiment gone wrong in an area previously unexplored in the Fallout series (Like Arizona or Kansas).
Cataphracts- While the Legion is technophobic to a pointthere is a broad list of technologies they’re willing to use. Vulpes used a dirty bomb to irradiate Searchlight, Legion assassins wield Thermic lances as well as both Pulse and Plasma Grenades. Atticus provides the Courier with an endless supply of Stealth boys and the Van Graff quest shows that Caesar is trying to get his hands on energy weapons. Therefore the Legion using Salvaged Power Armor doesn’t seem so farfetched. Without the strength enhancements it’s essentially just big heavy armour.
Note:
This mod was largely inspired by Dragbody's brilliant work with Caesar's New Regime. If you haven't downloaded it already for God's sake do so! The idea of the Legion using Behemoths came from him so credit where credit's due.
