History
Dan Wesson Arms was founded in 1968 by Daniel B. Wesson II, the great-grandson of Daniel B. Wesson I who co-founded Smith and Wesson in 1856. The company's first production revolvers were based on a modular design by Karl R. Lewis which allows the barrels to be quickly and easily changed between a variety of lengths. Dan Wesson revolvers were typically sold in kits with several barrels which could be swapped without specialized equipment. In the 1970s, Dan Wesson partnered with Elgin Gates to develop several new high-powered magnum handgun cartridges for use in their revolvers. Among these were the .357 SuperMag (AKA .357 Maximum,) .375 SuperMag, .445 SuperMag, and later the .414 SuperMag. The cartridges were developed for long-range metallic silhouette shooting, a popular sport which requires very high-energy cartridges to knock over steel plates at extreme ranges especially for handguns. A Model 40 SuperMag chambered in .357 Maximum is the revolver in this mod. The .357 Maximum/SuperMag cartridge was made by lengthening a .357 Magnum case by 5/16 inch and using a much higher volume of slow-burning powder with small rifle primers, producing approximately double the muzzle energy of the parent .357 Magnum and approximately equal energy to the .44 Magnum, with a lighter, faster bullet. A typical .357 Maximum load will produce a muzzle velocity of 2000 ft/s with a 158 grain bullet, while a .357 Magnum load of the same weight from the same barrel length will only achieve 1400 ft/s or so. Guns chambered in .357 Maximum can also fire the shorter .357 Magnum and .38 Special cartridges, so the gun in the mod can use the vanilla .357 and .38 ammo in addition to .357 max.
The gun is balanced to do the same damage as the vanilla .357 revolver with a long barrel mod using standard .357 magnum ammo, but using .357 maximum ammo from the mod it deals 90% more damage per shot at the cost of increased condition decay. It is much more accurate than the .357 revolver, and has a special scripted effect which makes the gun deal a guaranteed critical hit with the last round in each cylinder. Are you feeling lucky, punk?
