JSawyer Ultimate Edition has always been my go to mod for balance and gameplay changes. However, I've always found dealing with the Deranged Bright Followers in the early levels to be a bit a nuisance. So I just disable them.
This mod simple sets their spawn flags to Deleted so that they don't appear at Wolfhorn Ranch.
Mod only requires JSawyer Ultimate Edition and it's requirements.
