About this mod

Changes the recipes for purifying water to be a bit more challenging/resource intensive

Changelogs
OVERVIEW:
Purifying water in the base game is a little weird. Firstly, the implication seems to be that you're simply boiling the water, which would be ineffective at removing radiation. Second, it requires a Survival skill of a whopping 50 which seems completely overkill for something that anyone with access to a stove/fire can do easily. And lastly, the idea that purifying water is as simple as heating it up makes the plot of FO3 incredibly stupid, for my TTW players out there. And so, that's where this mod comes in. No longer can you magically boil the radiation away. Instead, there are two new recipes in place, which are:

Mass Purified Water (Filtration)
  • Requires 5 Dirty Water, a Pot, and a new misc item, the Charcoal Filter. As well as a Survival skill of 30.
  • Returns 4 Purified Water and the Pot
  • I researched different ways in which you can actually remove radiation from water, and activated carbon filtration seemed the most fitting for Fallout. This new misc. item can be found in the same places as valuable scrap like conductors i.e. in toolboxes, and also on merchants. It returns less water than you put in due to some getting lost in the filtration process.

Mass Purified Water (RadAway)
  • Requires 5 Dirty Water, 2 Glass Pitchers, 1 Surgical Tubing, and a RadAway. As well as a Survival skill of 10 (so basically the same as none).
  • Returns 5 Purified Water, and the pitchers + tubing
  • This is designed for an early way to purify water, but also requiring a steeper resource cost of a valuable chem. However it does provide a better return since RadAway is naturally more effective at cleansing radiation.

RECOMMENDED MODS:
This was designed for use alongside Universal Water Bottling, and a patch is available to allow it to cover the newly added recipes. Said changes are listed in the spoiler text below:

Show

Mass Purified Water (Clear)
  • Requires 5 Clear Water and 1 Pot. As well as a Survival skill of 10.
  • Returns 5 Purified Water and the pot.
  • This water can actually just be boiled pure, since it's merely "unclean" and not irradiated.

Purify Water
  • Requires 1 Clear Water and 1 Pot. As well as a Survival skill of 10.
  • Returns 1 Purified Water and the pot.
  • A granular version of the above, for people who don't wish to do it in bulk.

Mass Purified Water (Irradiated)
  • Requires 3 Irradiated Water, 2 Glass Pitchers, 1 Surgical Tubing, and 1 RadAway. As well as a Survival skill of 10.
  • Returns 3 Purified Water, as well as the pitchers and tubing.
  • Heavily irradiated water is too contaminated for filtering, and uses RadAway less efficiently. This recipe is not particularly useful but mostly here for flavor, to reflect the difficulty in purifying heavily irradiated water.
I also highly recommend S6S Ingestibles as these recipes were balanced around it's changes to Dirty Water/RadAway, plus it will return you empty bottles after drinking beverages. Simple Diseases as well, to make drinking dirty water a riskier venture, and to further enhance the survival aspect of the game.

LIMITATIONS:
This mod is primarily designed to enhance the challenge of the TTW early game in the Capital Wasteland, where all the water sources are pretty bad. The amount of clear water available in the Mojave tends to render the resource challenge null no matter what. In the future I may consider adding on to this mod a feature of making more water in the Mojave radioactive. In the meantime if you desire such a thing, I recommend Water Overhaul.

COMPATIBILITY:
Should be compatible with almost everything. Anything which edits the vanilla Mass Purified Water recipe will conflict, but you should be able to load this mod after it to make my changes take precedence.
