About this mod
Add a Unique set of Lakelurk hunter/poacher combat armor, rewarded after completing a hunting quest given by a brand new Voice acted NPC: the Lake's Poacher
- Permissions and credits
"Rumours has it that the local Lakelurk population, usually endemic in these seasons of the year, has dropped drastically in these past few weeks. Voices talk about a mysterious hunter, clothed in an armor made of aquatic mutants remains, who has supposedly been hired by the residents of Boulder City to clean the nearby beach. If all of this is true, this man would have set up a floating camp at the center of Lake Mead, using it as a base to strike down nearby Lakelurks"
Intro:
The Lakelurks of New Vegas always felt like an underdeveloped idea, being relegated to be reused Mirelurk Kings and references to the Black Lagoon Monster. Worse, the entire plotpoint of Camp Guardian and the Lakelurk nest was usually overlooked by most players, with the location being uninteresting and with no interesting reward to collect from defeating the Lakelurk King.
Having recently joined the team working on the megamod Fallout The Odyssey, one of my early contributions for the mod inspired me to create an alternative for regular New Vegas: a unique combat armor mixing Lakelurk + Mirelurk body parts (custom 2k textures by Phlunder, so no Fallout 3 assets before you ask) a sort of trapper/poacher outfit made of aquatic mutants remains.
Dive in the water, meet the (voice acted my me) Lake's Poacher, and after proving yourself worthy of being his successor, gain his unique armor, which will enable you to make a fortune out of slaying Lakelurks!
Overview:
- A new set of Reinforced Combat armor, with Mirelurks and Lakelurks trophy parts
- A new hunting quest to obtain the armor, involving slaying the Lakelurk King and bring back a proof
- A new questgiver, the Lake's Poacher, with 58 Voice acted voicelines (by me with a voice modifier)
- A new Perk active only when the armor is worn by the player
- A new item that will only spawn on Lakelurks if the Perk is active, and can be sold for a good amount of caps
- Activator to teleport the NPC back on the platform if he go away swimming
- Custom icon for the new perk
- Custom icon for the new Lakelurk item
Detailed content:
Quest Gill-Manhunt:
You can find the Lake's Poacher on the Scavenger floating platform (center of Lake Mead), usually patrolling the floating structure, shooting down the Lakelurks there, and sometimes swimming around. Once spoken to, The Poacher will talk a bit about his job, which can lead the player to notice something is off (Speech Check of 60). Once the Speech Check passed, the Poacher will explain about his intentions to retire after this last job, but how the current Lakelurks hive structure combined with his age makes it difficult to complete.
You can then propose to finish the job for him in exchange of being named his successor, get his armor and hunting methods. The Poacher will then send you to inspect the caves bellow Cave Guardian to slay the ruling entity there and bring him a proof (without proof he will not believe you so collect the hand from the Lakelurk King). Once this is done (or if you did in the the past prior to your meeting AND collected the hand), he will pass the armor set down to you and officially retire.
Perk: Lurkpoacher:
When wearing the armor gained at the end of Gill-Manhunt, you will gain the Perk Lurkpoacher. This perk has two effect: first you will get a handy X1.3 damage multipliers against Lakelurks, and secondly, any Lakelurk killed (WHILE the armor on) will drop a single Lakelurk Collar Meat (see down below). Removing the armor will result in loosing the Perk and its effect (if you reequip it, the Perk will be added again and so forth)
Lakelurk Poacher Armor Set:
The Lakelurk Poacher Armor set takes the form of a rusty and muddy dirty Reinforced Combat Armor Mk II, with multiple trophies slapped over it. Mirelurk shells now reinforce the chestpiece, while mirelurk hatchlings shells protect the knees and helmet. Two hooks on the belt now carry around a cut Lakelurk hand, and a ripped off Lakelurk face.
Effects wise, the armor makes you gain the Perk Lurkpoacher when worn, provides +10 Survival, +2 Poison resistance and +1 Endurance.
(The armor set can be gained at the end of Gill-Manhunt, being passed down to you by the Poacher. You CAN'T get it otherwise, killing the Poacher to loot the armor isn't possible, since he wear a NPC unique version of it. You want to be a Lakelurk hunter? Then go hunt the Lakelurk King, no other way around.)
Lakelurk Collar Meat:
With the Perk Lurkpoacher active (so while you are wearing the Lakelurk Poacher armor), any Lakelurk you kill will drop a single Lakelurk Collar Meat. This delicate meat you have learned to scavenge through the Poacher's teachings written on the armor grant minor radiation and some health if eaten, but is far more useful as a selling item. Each piece is worth 3000 caps, so enjoy your new fortune by hunting the Lakelurks into extinction
Poacher's Diary:
In some cases, the Poacher will jump in the water and swim around, but can still be interracted with normally. However, in some cases (if Lakelurks are swimming around), talking to him (and thus advancing Gill-Manhunt) can be challenging as he will focus on the Lakelurk he can't even shoot at (since he is in the water). To adress this possible case, interract with the book (Poacher's Diary) located in the platform. This will make the Poacher teleport on your position (so on the platform), and enable him to talk to you as usual.
Compatibility and plans for the future
Compatibility: Might be incompatible with mods that modify Lakelurks/Mirelurks (since i move them all to the giant class so that the perk only target them). Mods might work together normally , but the collection of Collar Meat via the Perk might not work correctly
Plans: Add new non-dialog voicelines for the Poacher's (since his goodby and salutations are still regular Old Man voices), perhaps add a job to the Thorn to capture live Lakelurks or their eggs. Also add a version where the now retired Poacher teleport to Boulder City once the quest is completed

Credits:
-WebbProductionEntertain, for giving me the mini mirelurk meshes i twisted for the armor
- Phlunder for agreeing to let me use his Mirelurk 2k textures (which i retextured on my own to fit the Lakelurk colors), also used in Mirelurks of the Mojave
