CHANGE BASE NPC WORKERS
by @highmacleod

Change the appearance of your NPC Workers, the NPCs you hire for your base: Gek Overseer, Korvax Scientist, Vy'Keen Armourer, Gek Farmer and Vy'Keen Technician.

* Spoiler Alert*

ABOUT
If you wanted to change your NPC Workers in the past, you just had to talk to another suitable NPC at a Space Station or Trading outposts spread throughout a planet. Now you can't do that and once you hire a NPC they'll be the one at your base.

So, to change your NPC Workers, or how they look, you either have to overwrite their seed numbers by editing your save game raw JSON file, or you copy/paste the default code lines related to those NPCs in your JSON save file, reset them and hire a new NPC in-game.

If you don't want to meddle with seeds, or haven't found around a seed you like, or if you have seen some cool NPCs at a station and would like them to be at your base, then this mod is for you. It's pretty simple, just copy/paste some text into your save file and you're done.

Tested for PC Steam
Game version: 134078
Save Version: 4167
January 2025

NOTES
- I added the text code as shown in the exported raw .json files as well as the text as shown in the SaveEditor so you just have to copy/paste the code lines you need.
- You can do the NPC Workers quests first then change the NPCs later, no problem.
- Changing/Resetting the NPC Workers won't affect your quest progress.

DISCLAIMER
Careful when using mods so you won't lose your data. I take no responsibility if you lose items, save files, account data, or if anything goes wrong with your game or whatever. Use this mod at your own risk.

I don't know if the NPC Workers in your save file will be written in the same A, B, C, D, E order as they are in my saves, they probably will, but test it out.

ALWAYS BACKUP YOUR SAVES AND FILES BEFORE DEALING WITH MODS!

SAVE LOCATION
Default save folder location for No Man's Sky, Steam version on Windows:

"C:\Users\AppData\"yourusername"\Hello Games\NMS\"st_###"
Whereas "yourusername" is the Windows account name you use (i.e. JohnWick) and "st_###" is the Steam folder with the Steam numbers related to your account (i.e. st_1234567890)

Example:
"C:\Users\AppData\JohnWick\Hello Games\NMS\st_1234567890"

HOW TO
Summarizing:
- Select your save file that you want to change the NPC Worker or Workers
- Copy the text in this mod file you downloaded, related to the NPCs you wish to change
- Paste the text you copied in the right part of the 'NPCWorkers' session of your save file, using the JSON Editor of the Save Editor
- Save and launch the game
- Find the NPC Workers with the appearance you like and hire them

Detailed Guide:
• Download this mod files
• Download the goatfungus NMS Save Editor (or another app that can edit the game's .hg files)
• Backup your save files
• Select the save file you want your NPC Workers changed

There will probably be a few save files (like 'save.hg', 'save2.hg', 'save3.hg', 'save4.hg', etc) within your game save folder, so to be sure of which file(s) you need to change, do the following:
- launch the game
- load the game save you wish to change the NPC Workers
- save your game
- go to your game save folder "C:\Users\AppData\"yourusername"\Hello Games\NMS\"st_###"
- change the 'View' option to 'Details' so you can sort by 'Date Modified' and see the time and date of the file you just saved

Usually, a game save will have 2 save instances, one for 'auto-save' another for a 'save restore point'. For example, the files 'save.hg' and 'save2.hg' belong to one game save (one file is the 'auto-save' another file is the 'save restore point'), the files 'save3.hg' and 'save4.hg' belong to another game save and so on.

• Now you either convert the .hg file to .json, so you can edit the file, or launch a Save Editor that can do so (I used and recommed 'NMS SaveEditor by goatfungus', but 'NomNom' is also a great one)

• In the SaveEditor, select your save file, go to 'Edit' > 'Edit Raw JSON', so it will open the JSON Editor

• In the JSON Editor, go to 'BaseContext' > 'PlayerStateData' and scroll down to 'NPCWorkers'

• Open the mod file you downloaded, 'Install (Save Editor) - Change Base NPC Workers.txt'

- If you want to change/reset all your NPC Workers, just copy everything in the .txt file and paste it in the 'NPCWorkers' session on the JSON Editor then save the file.

When you run the game again, you'll notice your NPC Workers won't be by their terminals at your base, they'll be reset, so you'll have to talk to a suitable overseer for hire at a Space Station/Trade Outpost.

This will just reset the NPC Workers, the quests related to them won't be affected.

- If you want to change a specific NPC Worker, copy the session related to that NPC in the .txt file and paste it in the right 'NPCWorkers' session in the JSON Editor.

The 'NPCWorkers' session has 5 parts separated by curly brackets { } and each part is related to a NPC Worker:

A) Vy'Keen Armorer - Weapons Terminal
B) Gek Farmer - Agricultural Terminal
C) Gek Overseer - Construction Terminal
D) Vy'Keen Technician - Exocraft Terminal
E) Korvax Scientist - Science Terminal

- Copy the part related to the NPC Worker you want to change, paste it in the 'NPCWorkers' session in the 'JSON Editor', save your file and the NPC will reset.

- Find a NPC with the looks you like at a Space/Trade Station and hire them.

- Quest progress will be unaltered and you'll have new NPC Workers for your base.

- That's about it.

• You can also manually do this process, without using the editor, by unpacking your .hg save file to a .json file, editing it and then repacking it into a .hg file, but using the Save Editor just makes everything easier and faster.
