Since the Crisis broke out, the Imperial Legion has recruited a huge number of new soldiers to turn the tide of the war. Paradigm shifting laws have been put in order which allow criminals to join the army under the promise that if they serve well, they could regain their freedom and the privileges of a proper Imperial citizen.
As the situation progressed and soldiers have fallen at an increasing rate by the hands of the Daedra, the High Council decided to let women join the Legion as well to maintain the garrison numbers at the cities and fortresses.
The majority of the province now looks like a giant battlefield with wooden barricades, hastily assembled watchtowers and mass graves scattered around the landscape. The roadside settlements and inns have all been emptied. People seek refuge in Legion establishments, hidden caves and secluded mountain peaks to avoid the horrors of the war. Without the ability to safely travel the roads, news arrive at an even slower pace so the counties are almost entirely separated.
After the almost total annihilation of the 4th Company of the Western Imperial Legion Regiment, the garrison remnant of Fort Sunset Vista has the task of closing a new Oblivion portal nearby. At Brina Cross Inn in the chilly morning weather, behind the frontline, the soldiers are awaiting the enemy, eager to shoot an arrow between their eyes...

Being part of a little group of soldiers has its beauty too, though!
Your experiences seem like just the opposite - genuinely stern and serious stuff for real fighters.
