About this image

Hey, guys(1)! Happy new year! And all the rest!

- - -

Yeah, well, that's not how I thought I'd be passing these last days, being thrown into prison for stealing a bout of covid -- I mean, that person had more than enough of it anyway, and didn't even notice anything missing, really.

Nice of the guy in purple to show up for comfort.  Didn't see much of him around Christmas.

- - -

Look here, I'm using the downime to set up a nice and proper Oblivion under Linux.  Swooooosh!  Fun!

I'll probably turn to a smaller screen later :P -- on the other hand, when playing in 1st person, it's not that bad at all.

- Tes4Edit works like a charm.  Hey, I'm a Patron! :)

- CSE rolls, too.

- My Wrye does Bash its Patches all fine while refusing to install archives.  If it isn't going to behave very soon, I'd be forced to turn to ModOrganizer for that.

Listen, I'm using the 'borg' backup tool to keep well working stages of the installation safe.  That's comfy!  Why didn't anyone tell me before?!

- - -

So, good luck, and fare thee well!

And keep those beautiful/funny/nice/informative/... pictures coming!

tp.

. . . . . . .

Ahh! When unzipping archives WB needs access to a directory "/.wbtemp" -- yep, that's Linux's root!  I'm probably missing an environment variable or so.
    So, WB rolls, too!
    And Oblivion Reloaded!

This is very interesting. Are you using Wine?

Yes, Wine, and WB's latest "dev" version, 312. But it was 311 where I came across this installation problem first.

      EDIT: console logs stuff like:
      "   ntf = tempfile.mkstemp(dir=base_dir or _get_global_dir(),   "
      See?

Hmm... base_dir not set by the looks of things. I'm still eyeing switching back to Linux. My house has been Windows-less since 1995, but a couple of years ago I bought a Windows PC for Oblivion... I'd give it a Linux lobotomy in a snap if I could be sure it would all work. Just didn't want to add an extra layer of complexity there. So very glad to read reports like yours that it all does work after all.

1995?  Also traumatised by Windows 95's impulsive behaviour?  Like, crashing just when you want to save these important changes to your very important paper? Oh, the rage.

But, there is extra complexity here, I'm afraid.  'Bottles' and 'Lutris' are all fine for installing stuff.  But if you don't know what they are doing, you are lost when they fail, and they do at some point. (Because people like me *cough* don't write installation scripts for them.)

Better IMHO to start from scratch with the help of 'winetricks', and wine's own tools.  And write a quick note of what you're doing when you're doing it.  Now I am pretty confident that I can trouble-shoot the whole thing.

Never would have done it w/o Covid :D

Where I used to live, Windows 95 did not get deployed professionally until 1998 at least (too unstable... nah, surely, that couldn't be it?). No, we were still on Windows 3.10 at the time, you were "modern" if you had 3.11. Those were the days. I started with Linux 0.95 then, and wine appeared soon afterwards. But I haven't touched wine since then, admittedly, always working on *nix natively.

Actually, the reason I installed Linux on my i286 laptop was that Windows was overheating it. It was getting quite literally too hot to handle, and then of course it would shut down. Even melted a floppy disk once that I had left in the drive... Hot stuff!!

I dunno... This Windows 10 that came installed on my PC, is actually surviving my treatment. Not crashing too much. I haven't seen a screen of death since it got introduced.

Frying floppies, you were, weren't you?! :D Nice chat.

Back then, at university, my marriage with Win311 was short, and unconsummated (as well as unlegalised, funds were low).  Ruefully back I turned to DOS, and WordPerfect, and Lotus Symphony ... At boot time, I had to choose between the German keyboard driver and the mouse driver, sine the two if them wouldn't fit into memory at the same time.  To this day I know much of the US keyboard layout by heart, like 'o-diaeresis' is ';' and so on.

Wine & Oblivion: Now, that I come to think of it, setting up a modded Oblivion seems straight forward if one keeps 32bit vs 64bit applications, with all their DLLs and stuff, well separated.  And after that it's a charm.

Windows10: Oh, yeah! It seems really save and cool to me, they even allow for virtual desktops! Woah! What's next? Symbolic links for the peasants? Free ice-cream?

You girls(?) are a threat to the Universe. Free Icecream to all will kill the economy.

I love you - if that means something to you :)

You are still performing magics Tesa :) I will never forget the tour you gave us in Hammerfell/Taneth/Dune Castle. Did you actually fly the carpet? Lifted my mod to a new level.

Fred! I'm so glad you're still -- in one form or name or another -- with us. :D

Of course I did fly the carpet!! I always do! It's the one from Mighty Midas. No idea why you folks don't use it!?

I mean, sure, the Ministry of Magic objects, as we know.  But its jurisdiction doesn't reach beyond Great Britain, does it?  So, who cares?

I'm looking forward to inspect -- by foot or carpet -- your latest works.  Prepare. :)

Hurrah! Do you know Men in Black 3? The bit where Griffin  says: This is my favourite part of human history? Well, this comment is my fave part of Nexus!

Sorry about the Covid and hope you're well now. People are way too generous with that if you ask me!

MiB 3?  No, I stopped at MiB 1.  It had a lasting impact on me.  Whenever I wipe a big insect off my wind shield, I think of the fate of that fat cricket in the first few seconds of the movie ... Ouch! Did I kill an alien, like, right now?!
Wonderful thing, that one was. LMAO.

Covid:  Thanks for your concern.  I tested negative lately, and spent this day ticking off a loooooong shopping list of our mom's :D  And, yeah, people in the shop sneezing, coughing, crowding ... I wouldn't care, if only this wouldn't cost the elderly so dearly.  So, yeah, vax and mask, as our mom does; this season she stayed clear so far.
