As of 10/12/2023, do I recommend FCOM? The answer is, sadly, no.
Note that this is my subjective point of view, others may have had the time of their life while playing FCOM and think that the good outweights heavily the bad. I’m not one of them, sadly.
There are many issues with Fcom that warrants my current idea:
1) The mod is not updated; You have to go around finding the unofficial patches made by other people that enjoyed FCOM and that’s the first sign of decay.
2) The mod is made in such a way that makes you have to download many different archives only to have the “intended” experience and the only reason it is done this way is to pay homage to the modders that made it possible. While I can
understand the need to make everyone realize who made what, I think that the modders could certainly have their “acknowledgement” by the community by experiencing it.
I will make an example:
- There are certain skeletons, who made them? War cry and I enjoyed that a lot.
- there are reavers that are a pain in the ass and they have a runeskull with them; their additions is great and makes you feel in danger, especially when you enter Oblivion gates
- spectral warriors that are very tough (who made them?) – Oscuro, of course.
To sum up, it would be way and way better if there was a single .esp and a single archive to be downloaded to experience FCOM in his whole being.
3) Some will say that forcing the player to download different archives was done to make the players customize the experience. After all, you could go for example, with COM, without Francesco, but I don’t think that’s a good justification. The customizability of FCOM is made with .esps and that’s another clue that the mod is simply old.
FCOM should be one archive, one .esp, with the possibility of customization with a menu inside the game itself.
4) FCOM should start with lore-friendly settings. As I criticize Maskar for having enemies with frostmourne and the lich king armor, I must criticize FCOM for having creatures such as the Balrog (from lord of the rings) that do not have any reason to be in game.
The balrog is the most known culprit, but there are other creatures.
5) This is a personal issue I have with FCOM. I want the world to be totally deleveled, or at least, I don’t want new creatures spawning out of the blue due to me improving levels. As such, Fcom reminded me of the Morrowind approach (new mobs get unlocked as soon as you level up), but that’s disappointing for me; as disappointing is the fact that you still have leveled rewards.
So if you wish to have a deleveled world, you will have to wait for Maskar new levelling mod that forces the game to think you are actually higher level than you are; and if you wish for deleveled rewards, I recommend using Unleleved rewards and sigil stone always Trascendent.
6) Thehelljoint bug is the clear sign that no one is left to support Fcom.
Simply said, do not play Fcom. But if you wish to do so, the guide will help you.
TL;DR
- Fcom should be one archive and one .esp with all the updates by the community being merged into the .esp.
- Fcom should be customizable with a in-game menu.
- Fcom should start with a lore-friendly setting.
- [subjective] Fcom should be totally develeled, but it’s not.
